Sandra Schrift introduced our two speakers:
Bill Holland, President and CEO of The Holland Group Inc., Registered Investment Advisory Firm. A Registered Financial Advisor and Securities Representative with the Securities Center Inc. With over 40 years of successful Wall Street experience, Bill Holland oversees hundreds of millions of dollars of client investments and routinely handles over one million dollars in transactions each week. With 40 years on local radio and television, Bill Holland has been the voice of Wall Street here in San Diego. Bill Holland was previously a Rotarian with the Chula Vista Rotary Club.
George Chamberlin is the Executive Editor for the Daily Transcript, San Diego’s only daily business newspaper. He is also the business editor for KOGO Radio and host of “Money in the Morning,” a personal finance program on every Sunday morning. In addition, he is the Money Advisor for NBC 7/39 and a columnist for the North County Times. He is the publisher and editor of a national newsletter, Investing for Rookies. George Chamberlin has been honored three times by the Small Business Administration as the Media Advocate of the Year.
Bill Holland said there is good news – stock market is up 23%. 2009 was the best year in decade. Recession is over, it ended in the 3rd quarter of 2009, but the problem is that no one believes it is over. It is a mistake to micromanage the business of Wall Street. Most people have recovered approximately 50% of what was lost during the recession. Businesses are doing well and the recession has allowed companies to clean house and cut inventory. Employment is steady and the trend is going up consistently. Two bubbles to watch: gold and China.
George Chamberlin agreed with Bill Holland’s assessment. He believes the turning point was 9 March 2009 for the Dow Jones/Nasdaq/S&P. His advice is to stay in the game, and there is big money to be made. Real estate – land is geographically limited in San Diego by ocean, international border and Camp Pendleton, which means there cannot be much build out, only build up and that will be a hard sell. It is times like these when big wealth will be made. There are Small Business Association loans available for start-ups. Manufacturing and energy are two areas that have most growth potential. The recession allowed companies to get rid of poor performers.
