THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Our speaker was past RI President Luis Vicente Giay , who presented on the challenges and opportunities being faced by international Philanthropy.  "Rotary is part of a hidden revolution in the world," he said, as philanthropy has become a path to celebrity.  From 1986 through 2006, there was a huge growth in the United States philanthropic contribution, and individual donors have become much more specific in their goals and search for outcomes.  "They want to see actual change."  He introduced us to the concept of Philanthro-Capitalism, which is the use of business methods in the field of philanthropy.  As Bill Gates has said, "Philanthropy Is Not for Amateurs Anymore."  Government bodies are seeking to partner with international philanthropies, particularly at Rotary.  As an example, Rotary International is working on a partnership with USAID to develop water projects internationally.  The goal is to unite in common ideas for the benefit of mankind.
