Bulletins - 2009 - 11/04/2009

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Mary Engles

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The Meeting was called to order by President Karen Green at 7:30 AM.  Josie McCain led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Alex Kwoka reminded us of the words of the Dalai Lama regarding the challenge of  living in periods of change. Mary Engles led us in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner.

SGT. AT ARMS

Bitches & Brags segment highlighted the upcoming golf  threesome of Don Lang, Paul Marsh and Jonathon Stone playing in a benefit for breast cancer prevention, Alex Kwoka bragged about the diagnostic acumen of Dr Vinets in identifying a diseased “bite” her son obtained during foreign travel; Claire Remillard waived just some of the money she won when she was at least allowed to join her husband for a “boys night out” card game . No one seemed to have much to gripe about this session!

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Member Nancy Vaughn then introduced our speaker Dan Eaton , partner in the Litigation Department of  San Diego law firm Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek and an expert on the Supreme Court. Mr Eaton is the former Chair and current member of the San Diego County Bar Legal Ethics Committee and has served on several local ethics advisory boards. He is also the legal analyst for the KPBS program :These Days” which examines local issues.  Instead of a long lecture, Mr Eaton enrolled us all in a mock court as reviewing judges for a landmark case: Board of Directors of Rotary International vs Rotary Club of Duarte, CA. Heard in 1987, this case was pivotal in  ushering women into full membership in Rotary clubs. After reviewing, among themselves, the key facts and legal principles involved in the case, the audience voted either with a red or green paper to either overturn or uphold the ruling of a lower court to support the admission of women into Rotary in all its forms. We all know the beneficial outcome!! Thanks Rotary Club of Duarte.
