There was a lot of laughter as Karen called out the various Disco themed team names and as the captains tried to “one up” each other with their reports. Joe Marshall then reports the status of the fundraiser activities and invited all interested to attend the next meeting at his office to be held Thursday February 18th at 5:30. Ms. Steele is the Founder and Director of Interactions for Peace, a 501c3 whose mission is to provide a seamless system of integrated programs that empower and inspire our youth to discover the peacemakers within themselves and to serve their communities through peaceful interactions. Ms. Steele was the first winner of the District 5340 PeaceMaker Award presented in 2008.
The organization has been operating since 1989 with no staff, depending entirely upon volunteers. There are currently more than 1,000 volunteers working world-wide. The organization is funded through donations and the sales of books and workshops.
This organization has an international presence with groups in the Philippines and Uganda as well as throughout San Diego. One of our own Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, Wadri Patrick is very involved in this program in Africa.
The organization works with children of all ages to help them develop peace-making skills that will contribute to building a strong foundation for lifelong peaceful interactions. There are four programs, each of which developed for specific age groups. The Primary Peacemakers are pre-schoolers through second grade. The Peace Patrol is for third through sixth graders. The Middle School Mediators are for middle school students and the Bullies Beware! Program is for those in upper grades.
This organization has been recognized as making a direct contribution to continuing, sustaining, and compelling growth towards district-wide student academic achievement and improved API and AYP scores.
This organization helps make problem solving much easier, builds skills and knowledge and teaches “how to” promote peace both at school and in day to day life. This is done by teaching: Self-Awareness and Worth, Cooperation, Communication, Conflict Resolution and integrating Parent and Community Connections.
The following organizations have given well-deserved recognition to this organization: Rotary District 5340, California State School Boards Foundation, San Diego Mediation Center, San Diego County Office of Education/Children’s Hospital and the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.
