Bulletins - 2010 - 02/17/2010

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman, Esq.

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

New member Alison Hooper started work on her blue badge requirements and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Chris Carstens provided a thought provoking invocation and urged us all to "get to know the homeless."  Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney, in honor of Peace Month, lead us in song with "Let There Be Peace."

SGT. AT ARMS

The raffle rolled over to the next week after Brad Leitch, Frank Defrancesco and Chris Jacobs all failed to pull the magic marble from the hat.  Lynn Hamilton purchased a special calendar.  Linda Jalving won an auction for a copy of a cd of the Power of 3.  Paul Marsh announced his son turned 2.  Audrey Coleman paid a fine on behalf of Sandee Rugg's birthday.  Gary Green recognized the mother of our fabulous student of the month.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Chris Carstens and Claire Remiliard presented Amy Fitzpatrick with a check for the Women's Resource Fair which will take place on March 6th and serves over 600 women.
  • The program chair reminded everyone that in two weeks Marvin Hamlish will be our guest speaker and encouraged everyone to bring a guest.
  • Jonathon Stone announced that the wine tasting was being post-poned.
  • Nancy Vaughan announced that she had discovered that the USO really could use some help purchasing coffee and asked everyone to bring coffee to donate to the February 23rd meeting or just bring money and they will buy for the club.
  • Frank Defrancesco announced that we would be assisting with a meal at the Senior Center on April 3rd.
  • Scott Carr reminded everyone that the club membership directory is to be used only for club related news and not for personal or work events and communications.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Judy Bambace introduced our student of the month from San Diego High, YiQiu (pronounced E-Chew) Hu. This remarkable student speaks Chinese, Hungarian and German but spoke very little English when he moved here.  He is trying to teach his fellow students why its cool to be a nerd.  He started a Science Club and hosts morning study groups.  His goal is to teach others how to study and to win the Nobel Peace Prize by the age of 35.  We have no doubt that he will achieve these lofty goals.

BLUE BADGE PRESENTATION:  Chris McCain, Barry Kohn, and Wendy Patrick received their Blue Badges from the membership committee.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Sandra Schrift presented our Club's Peacemaker of the Year award to Christopher Yanov, Founder and Director of Reality Changers.  This organization helps inner city youth and at risk youth become first generation college students and to get out of the circle of gang violence.  He was recently recognized by President Obama.  Chris was thrilled to accept our award and spent some time talking about the work he does.  In fact, he rolled out a new stump speech that was very effective.  There are 10,000 gang related deaths every month.  Ten times more deaths than the highest monthly death toll in Iraq.  He calls it our second civil war.  While he recognizes that there is a big difference between soldiers and street thugs, many of the deaths are not of the gang members but the unlucky ones who live near or with them.  There is a siege mentality that these kids have to live with day in and day out.  These urban warriors just want peace and prosperity.  He said no child should have to be on a waiting list to get into a program like his.  Michael Gordon, a recent graduate of the program, gave a very moving talk about his struggles with homelessness and how seeking higher education was so important to him.  Chris then made a call to arms and asked everyone at the meeting to email him at chris@realitychangers.org to find out more about what they could do to help people like Michael break out of their circumstances and succeed in life.  Please visit www.realitychangers.org to find out more about this wonderful program.
