Bulletins - 2010 - 03/03/2010

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Mary Dawe

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Karen Green opened the meeting promptly at 7:30 a.m.  A lively, full house of members and guests were in attendance.  Bobbi Spinner-Flack led the pledge of allegiance.  Chris Carstens provided an inspiration with audience participation that illustrated the power of joining together for a common purpose.  Today's song was presented by Dillon Mulvaney.  Dillon entertained the crowd with a beautiful rendition of One from Chorus Line by Marvin Hamlisch.  Those enjoying his performance included many proud members of Dillon's family.

SGT. AT ARMS

Sergeant at Arms Scott Carr conducted the raffle for a pot of more than $500.  Unfortunately, all of those with winning tickets drew clear marbles so no one won the pot today.  Next week the pot will be even richer.

GUESTS

Frank De Francesco introduced many guests of members and many Rotarians visiting from as nearby as San Diego to as far away as Seattle, Washington.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING

New member Allison Hooper introduced composer, conductor and pianist Marvin Hamlisch.

As a composer, Mr. Hamlisch has won virtually every major musical award in the United States:  three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards.  His ground breaking show, A Chorus Line, received the Pulitzer Prize.

He is the composer of many motion picture songs and scores and musical adaptions, including for The Way We Were, Sophie's Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger, and The Informant!.  In addition, he holds the position of principal pops conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony and San Diego Symphony.

Mr. Hamlisch entertained a most appreciative audience by playing on the University Club piano excerpts from his own music and that of others.  He also delighted the crowd with his witty commentary and numerous humorous antidotes.

A quote from Mr. Hamlisch that is very appropriate to the mission of Rotary:

"Music can make a difference.  There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together.  Music is truly an international language and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can."

Thank you Mr. Hamlisch!
