This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Marti Hess

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was brought to order by President Karen Green. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Tanya Reid and the Invocation presented by Dave Ferguson. Linda Jalving lead the club in singing “Oh What a Beautiful Morning.”

SGT. AT ARMS

Melissa Trew donated tickets to the Gaslamp Shamrock Event and they were auctioned off for $20. Scott Carr reminded everyone of the used cell phone drive. There was $630 in the pot for the opportunity drawing, but no one drew the purple marble.

GUESTS

Guests present were: Sgt. Major Bobby Woods from USO, Major Ron Wildman from Salvation Army, Monica Cedano (Student) and her mother Soraya, Marilyn Moriarty, and Andriana Murphy. Visiting Rotarians included Fred and Joan Rice from Hampton, New Hampshire, Rich Molino from Niagara Falls, Joan Fredenberg from Club 33, and Beatrice from Ecuador.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The next fundraiser committee will take place a Joe Marshall’s office on March 15th. The event planning is coming along well.

  • Frank De Francesco brought in peas and beets for a donation to the club.

  • Dan Duncan announced a tour of Monarch School for March 22nd.

  • District Assembly will take place on March 20 at USD.

  • Karen Green announced that, in an effort to save water, it will be available from now on in a bottle on each table and Rotarians can serve themselves.

  • Claire Remillard announced that the Community Services committee will be serving lunch to seniors on April 3rd and April 24 is Rotarians @ work meeting.

  • The Group Study Exchange team teachers were introduced. They have just arrived recently from Ecuador.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Judy Bambace introduced the Student of the Month, Monica Cedano, who is a senior at San Diego High Science & Technology campus. She has won many awards during her high school tenure, primarily in academics and Army Jr. ROTC. She plans to attend SD City College and then transfer to Berkeley with a major in linguistics.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Nancy Vaughn introduced Dr. John Iverson and his assistant Rachel Jaunte from the Neurosciences Institute in Torrey Pines. Dr. Iverson spoke about how the brain makes sense of sound. The YouTube video of the dancing cockatoo was shown and he explained that they have studied the cockatoo to understand how he could be keeping the beat to a song. Prior to this study, it was assumed that humans were the only ones that could do this. The hypothesis is that because parrots have the ability to learn vocally, that part of their brain allows them to keep the beat to music similar to humans.

Next week’s speaker will be Lee Hacksaw Hamilton.
