THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton is an sportscaster and radio talk show host based in San Diego, California.  A 24-year citizen of San Diego, Lee is currently heard in the afternoon drive slot at XEPRS-AM, known on-air as "XX 1090 Sports Radio".  Hamilton is also a host on XM Radio's MLB Home Plate channel.  He began calling play-by-play for the NFL on Compass Media Networks in 2009.  He loves calling games, especially on NFL Sundays.

Hacksaw was the afternoon drive-time host on KLSD, "XTRA Sports 1360" in San Diego, from its launch in November 2007 until September 3, 2008, when his contract with parent company Clear Channel Communications expired and both sides chose not to renew it.  Before that, he served 17 years at XETRA-AM "XTRA Sports 690", a station that was operated by the current American operator of XEPRS, John Lynch.

Hamilton has also been a noted play-by-play host for the San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, USC Trojans, Minnesota Vikings, and San Diego State Aztecs.

Among the games he called was Super Bowl XXIX in January 1995, the only such appearance in team history. His partners were Jim Laslavic and Pat Curran.

Thoughts on various local sports teams:

  • San Diego Padres
    • A team in transition, especially in light of the ownership change.
    • Look for Kyle Blanks to have a breakout season.
    • Have spent heavily to build the farm system; building the talent from within.
    • Their Single-A affiliate in Fort Wayne, IN, won 101 games last year!  This is unheard of at the minor league level.
  • San Diego Chargers
    • Last year’s team made an incredible 13-3 run.
    • With current personnel changes, the Chargers can no longer be considered a deep playoff contender.
    • This year’s draft will be extremely important for the future of the franchise.  With no high picks, it will be difficult to fill all of the needs left by the recent personnel decisions.
    • Are fortunate to be in a weak AFC West division; will be challenged to win outside of the division.
    • May have missed their window of opportunity to fund a new stadium.
    • No viable options to leave San Diego.
  • SDSU Basketball
    • Coach Steve Fisher has done an excellent job coaching the team to this year’s NCAA Tournament run.
    • One of the youngest teams in the tourney, with all of the players returning next season.
    • Could be a special program in the making.
  • SDSU Football
    • Coach Brady Hoke turned a moribund Ball State program into a 12-0 team.
    • Great potential to rebuild SDSU Football to its past glory.

Closing:

The Downtown Breakfast Rotary has donated 30 Polio vaccinations in Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton’s name.
