THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Chris Jacobs delivered this week’s invocation. He inspired us to remember the 4-way test with an invocation adapted from Joseph D. Coons of Bellingham, WA. Lynn Hamilton led our pledge and then we joined in song with Linda Jalving to sing “Oh, what a beautiful morning.”

SGT. AT ARMS

Bitches & Brags updated us with Barry Tobias’ trip to the Buenos Aires Rotary; Pauline Lim’s upcoming trip to Sister Ethel’s Missionvale to research microcredit opportunities; Jenny Goodman’s daughter’s 5th birthday on St. Patty’s; Lynn Hamilton’s brag about silent auction items; Frank DeFrancesco’s auction item for a morning on Scott & BR’s radio show; Chris Jacob’s 14th anniversary of meeting his wife on a blind date.

GUESTS

Guests included our guest speakers, Wadri Patrick from Uganda and Giovanni Castellazi of Italy. Peter Tereschuck’s wife Liz and Rotaract member Bridget Johnson also joined us.  This week brought no visiting Rotarians to our meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Mel encouraged members to attend the upcoming District Council Dinner (April 7th, 5:30 pm, La Jolla Marriott) to hear the 4-way test finalists.

  • Mike Whitehurst passed out reminders for the District Conference (May 14-17, Temecula Creek Inn).

  • Our Rotarians At Work Day is coming up on April 25th at 8:30 am at the Veterans Village of San Diego. Larry Nuff began to collect payment for the Rotarians At Work Day T-shirts. Please bring your $7 next week if you haven’t paid yet.

  • Mark your calendar for the Demotion Party, June 16th. The location will be different this year and we will be at the University Club for this event.

  • Note, we will be dark for our regular breakfast meeting on June 17th.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

We had several special presentations today.

Robyn Bottomley presented our collection of dental care packets to Dr. Elizabeth “Betty” Jones of Hospital Infantil de las Californias. Our club made a $2,500 donation and 150 packets each containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss. Dr. Jones announced she has a donor who will match our funds, allowing our donation to stretch even broader. A special thanks was given to Dr. Stephen Tornay who worked with Colgate and P&G to bring in the in-kind donations.

Maureen Eberle and Jeramy Larson inducted new member Dr. Stephen Tornay.

Mike Whitehurst presented Bobbi Spinner-Flack with a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Today, we were lucky to have our Ambassadorial Scholars speak to our group. Wadri Patrick told us stories of growing up in grass huts in Uganda, attending school and making friends in India, and now finding himself studying in San Diego. If you ever visit him in Uganda, prepare to “eat the goat.” He also shared the results and pictures of his African tailgate fundraiser.

Next, we heard from Giovanni Castellazi of Italy. He was born in Modena and studied in Bolona. Now, in San Diego he is a bio-engineering research fellow at UCSD. His project is focused on acoustic fluid structure interaction. Huh? This is the study of waves – from earthquakes, sound waves to water waves.  Using MRI scans, he analyzes how whales receive and produce sounds. He applies theories and computer simulations to reproduce wave scenarios. The goal of this research is to apply the results to the medical field.
