GUESTS

Bobbi Spinner-Flack brought two guests; Karen Bucey and Judy Bambace each brought one guest.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Mel startled quite a few members by announcing the 2009 International Convention was being moved from Birmingham, England to Seoul, South Korea.  A collective sigh was heard when President Mel reminded us it was April Fool’s Day.

  • Bobbi Spinner-Flack gave a check for $2000 to the Ronald McDonald House.

  • Bobbi also announced our own Gidget Rangel is running the Rock n Rock Marathon and needs water station volunteers for her training sessions on April 11th and 18th.

  • The Rotary District Council meeting is April 7th.

  • The Rotary District Conference is May 14th through the 17th.

  • Larry Nuffer is coordinating Rotarians at Work Day on April 25th.

  • Jonathan Stone announced a Wine Tasting at the Chapman Collection on April 24th.  Part of the entry fee will be waived if you bring your own wine.  Jonathan also promoted a Rotaract fundraiser on April 16th.

  • Our officers Demotion Party at the University Club will be on June 16th.

  • The Club will be dark on June 17th.

  • President Mel announced our Club Foundation received a substantial donation from the Ron Erbetta Family Trust.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Jeramy Larson inducted our newest member, William Meade.  William is an Emergency Room physician and brings a very strong commitment to service to our Club.  Welcome William!  Jeramy Larson announced we have brought in seventeen new members this year.  On a sad note, Jack Gilbert and Rick Logan are resigning from the Club.  We wish them well.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Jeff Olson introduced Mr. McAllister.  Mr. McAllister was elected to his current position in 2002 and again in 2006.  He will be running for his third term next year.  His background consists of a stint in the Peace Corps, education at Cal State Fresno, USIU, Stanford and the Worden School in the University of Pennsylvania.  He is a second generation San Diegan.

Mr. McAllister oversees approximately $4.6 billion in collected taxes and a portfolio of $6.2 billion in investments.  978,000 parcel bills are sent out that generate $4.559 billion in tax revenues.

In 1982, Clair Burgener stated the three biggest problems facing the San Diego region were crumbling infrastructure, a water crisis, and a regional airport.  If you add traffic problems to those three other problems, it is an accurate description of the current situation.  It is Mr. McAllister’s opinion that we need to exert pressure to get local projects done.  Mr. McAllister oversaw the revamping of the tax bills we receive annually.  The photos at the top of the bills are reshot each year due to the ever-changing San Diego skyline.  Also, he oversaw the formation of the Local Banking Initiative, in which local banks are given in infusion to be used for improved Real Estate funding purposes.

One last impressive fact:  the Assessor’s office has a 97 – 97.5% collection rate.  That’s an amazing fact in today’s economy.
