Bulletins - 2009 - 04/08/2009

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Our meeting started a little bit early today so I did not catch the invocation or the flag salute.  Those extra two minutes really make a difference!  I should have waited a few more minutes though before coming in so that I would have missed our club's attempt to sing "Wild Thing" !!!

SGT. AT ARMS

Joe Cioken celebrated 40 years of marital bliss-WOW.  Gary Green paid a fine for being politically incorrect-again.  Karen Bucey and Jenny Goodman increased the odds for the rest of the club to win the progressive pot of money when they failed to pull the magic marble from the bag.  Lynn Hamilton went to New Orleans with her 20 year old son.  Mary Engles went to Los Angeles for shopping and art.

GUESTS

We welcomed a couple of guests this week including Rotarians from the Mammount and Bali clubs.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Mel Gallegos reminded us of the upcoming Speakeasy on May 2nd.
  • Maureen Eberle announced that one of the scholars is donating furniture for future scholars to use but we need a place to store it.  Also, he is selling his car.  Contact Maureen if interested.
  • District Conference is on May 15th in Temecula.  The La Jolla Golden Triangle has challenged us for participation.  As usual, we will kick their arses.  President Mel will be participating via teleconference from half way around the world.
  • Sandee Rugg is organizing a group to help serve seniors on May 2nd from 11:00-2:00.
  • Judy Bambace reported on the Pathways to Peace United Nations Program.  Our club sponsored a team (one of 26) from San Diego High.
  • Larry Nuffer promoted Rotarians at Work Day on April 25th.  We will be doing painting at the Veterans Village.
  • President Mel announced that Club 33 will be having T. Boone Pickens as their weekly speaker at their upcoming lunch meeting and encouraged us to attend.
  • Chris Jacobs urged everyone to get him their donated items for the fundraiser as he is in charge of organizing them.

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER

Karen Bucey introduced Candace Shuman from S.N.A.P.  Ms. Shuman gave an informative overview of the problem with non-neutered animals.  There are 14 animal shelters and over 150 rescue groups all trying to find homes for adoptable dogs and cats.  Thousands are needlessly euthanized each year because people are not being responsible and spaying or neutering their pets.  S.N.A.P. provides a Neuter Scooter that brings quality,low-cost fixes and other services.  They also provide educational programs for children.  Another aspect of their services is disaster relief during the recent fires.  S.N.A.P. is trying to educate the taxpayers that it is more economical to provide spay/neuter services rather than pay mop up costs to house and, likely, kill unwanted animals.  For more information, go to www.snap-sandiego.org.  The club was pleased to present a check to help with the purchase of a second Neuter Scooter.  Remember, please spay and neuter your pets!!
