Freedom Dogs is a 100% volunteer organization whose primary focus is to team Specialty Service Dogs with troops returning from war with PTSD and physical limitations. All donations go directly to the training and care of the Freedom Dogs and their military partners. Freedom Dogs go through a two year customized training that is quite tedious, time consuming, and costs almost twice that of training a regular service dog. The estimated cost from training to placing each Freedom Dog amounts to approximately $50,000 over a two year period. In May 2009, Freedom Dogs completed a pilot program at Camp Pendleton with several Marines of the Wounded Warrior Battalion - West. This pilot paired Specialty Service Dogs and their trainers with selected Marines as an adjunct to their rehabilitation. The success of this pilot now has the non-profit growing at a rapid rate.
