THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Green welcomed everyone to our last breakfast meeting of the Rotary year.  Steve Seligmann led us in the Pledge and Larry Nuffer provided the invocation.  Allison Hooper (piano), Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney led us in singing “America” with dedication to Col. Roy Jones, US Army, visiting from the Rotary Club of Coronado.

SGT. AT ARMS

Scott Carr thanked the membership for their generosity over this past Rotary year.  For his final contest to win an iPad we raised over $1,000.  And the winner is...Robyn Bottomley! Congratulations Robyn!

Larry Nuffer bid his father a bon voyage, as he will be presenting at a Hemingway conference in Switzerland. Scott Carr bid us all farewell as he is leaving for a bicycle tour of Slovenia, Austria and parts nearby.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Nancy Vaughan introduced Ron Mix, a Football Hall of Fame member from the San Diego Chargers.  Ron had a distinguished football career in the early days of the American Football League.  We were entertained with stories about players, coaches, and fans.  Ron spoke of the history of "comfortable" salaries paid to professional football players, but without any reasonable support after a player had retired.  A typical player may have come from a poor family and been raised by a single mother.  Players are often poorly educated, and possess few job skills after a professional playing career is over.  Many players lose money on bad investments, are overly generous to friends and family, and may be plagued will lifetime injuries resulting in high medical expenses.  Ron and others are leading an effort to bring attention to this situation, as many former players are not receiving support from their agents or the players union.  Key points of advocacy are:
1)  Seek an increase in player contributions to their retirement benefit programs.
2)  Extend the scope and coverage of health care benefits to retired players.
3)  Seek a reduction in the incident and frequency of head injuries in the sport.
4)  Reduce the incidence of physical contact during player practices.
5)  Provide exit interviews with retiring players and communicate the availability of benefits and programs.
