With a spirited welcome, President Karen Green called the meeting to order. Lynn Hamilton provided the invocation; Sandra Shrift led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney led us in a bold attempt to sing “Summertime.”
Scott Carr unveiled a new and graphically improved Rotary Buck with President Karen’s cheery face. Members can use these promissory bucks to purchase raffle tickets when they come with the excuse that “I left my wallet in the car.” Alan Talbott (long time no see, but nice to have him back) won the 50-50 drawing. Claire Remillard got fined because her company’s I-phone application was mentioned in the N.Y. Times. George Mullin had to cough up $ for airing his idea for new Chargers stadium location – Del Mar! Frank DeFrancesco was fined for turning 62, which he declared was older than Claire and Amanda Huynh combined.
To be honest, I didn’t think I’d be asked to remember these. Sorry! Pete McGuire did his typically outstanding job however.
- Karen urged members to sign up for multiple committees.
- Sandra Shrift is looking for a co-chair volunteer for Pathways to Peace.
- Robyn Bottomley and the Hon. Pat Cowett, social committee co-chairs, circulated a list of activities planned, including a backstage tour of the remodeled Old Globe Theater. To be there, or not to be there – that is the question!
- Bobbi Spinner-Flack announced the opening of the new MCRD Miramar Rotary Club.
- A wine-tasting is planned at Melissa Chapman’s store Aug. 14, 6:30 p.m. Call or e-mail Jonathan Stone if interested in attending.
- Dave Ferguson proudly announced that a memorial plaque honoring Ron Erbetta is now installed atop Mt. Soledad.
Mel Gallegos (the lls are pronounced like a y) presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Judy Bambace, her first! Congratulations, Judy!!
Dale Barnes of the Golden Triangle club teed up a great, visual presentation on a recent Group Study Exchange trip to East Africa. GSE is designed for professionals between age 25 and 40 in the early stages of their careers. Two of the teachers who were part of the exchange trip shared their personal experiences which involved visiting and teaching in various schools as wells as learning about African culture. One of their stops was to the Nairobi spinal cord injury hospital that our club supported through a matching grant.
