THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Jonathan Stone introduced our speaker, DG, Marge Cole, who began her talk with “Our Journey begins high in the Himalayas . . . and the future is in our hands.”  A nice way to move in to the Rotary theme for the year. The PowerPoint journey begins in East Africa, District 5340, in Kenya.  Our district contributed to the first Rotary Well in Takunga, Uganda as well as Isla Trinitaria in Guayaquil, Ecuador.  Marge noted the work of Father Simon who saves abused youth in Guayaquil.  They are served soy milk 2X a day from the Mechanical Cow that our District provided.  We saw photos of the National Immunization Day in India to eradicate polio.  Some of the monies from our November 7th Gala will be donated to our Polio Plus drive.  Marge reminded us that Bill Gates pledged a total of 355 million to Polio Plus.  Rotary needs to match 255 million of that amount.  Our District contributed 95 thousand in 2008!  Only 4 countries left for Polio eradication and less than 1500 cases reported.  In Central Mexico, Tasco area, there are ugly slums and low income schools.  Rotary has been supporting a new program in the district called LEAD which sends middle school youth to camp to learn about ethics and leadership.  The exciting news for District 5340 is that we were one of 100 districts world wide to be chosen for a pilot program called Future Vision.  District 5340 qualified for this prestigious participation because of our outstanding record in the International Community that includes volunteer service and monetary fund raising.   Marge also spoke about an anyominous donor in our Rotary District who is contributing 1 million to water projects.
