THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Karen Green called the meeting to order at 7:30am.   Mike Whitehurst led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pete McQuire gave a short but powerful invocation.  Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jelving led us in song.  “The Grand Old Flag” was a perfect choice to follow the invocation.

SGT. AT ARMS

Paul Marsh was the Sgt of Arm this morning as Scott Carr was busy preparing to be “social” and “networking”.  Two gift certificates were raffled.  Winner: Frank and Sharron.  Brags included Pat Cowett who advised that our club's contribution to a project on ophthalmology in Ecuador was featured on TV.  Martin Blair announced that a 3rd rotoract couple was married.  Linda Jalving bragged that Jewels by the Sea was nominated for Best Jeweler of La Jolla.  Gary Green recognized Susan Bleicher for her great work in organizing the housing for the International students-Rotary youth exchange.  Lastly, Paul Marsh bragged about his son again, how sweet.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Jonathan Stone introduced the speaker, Scott Carr, who presented this week's topic on Social Networking/Social Media.  Social Networks are websites that help individuals link up with one another.  Why use them?  They are being used as sources of news, used by business owners to communicate with customers, to connect with alumni, build a social network, promote your company, perform research, run for public office, invite individuals to events, collaborate with other professionals, verify information, and squash rumors, to name a few.  Scott then went on to identify some of the websites.  My Space was the “grand daddy” of the social networking sites that has recently fallen to 11th most popular website in the world and is more geared towards teenagers.  Facebook, partly owned by Microsoft, is the #1 photo sharing website in the world. The S.D. Downtown Breakfast Rotary has a Facebook page.  Linkedin is a social networking site designed for professionals.  Twitter is a short messaging service and is currently the 19th most popular website in the world; still gaining popularity.  There was much interaction between Scott and fellow Rotarians on the Pros and Cons of Social Networking Media.  This should be part 1 of a series presented by Scott Carr as he did not have time to finish his topic.  His presentation was upbeat and very informative.
