This week’s program presented the six beneficiaries of Holes for Heroes on September 25th at the Admiral Baker Golf course. The six organizations and presenters are as follows:
Tony Bertalino – Guide On Tony spoke about his father that was killed in Iraq when Tony was 13. He spoke about how his father would take them camping, fishing and outdoor activities. After the loss of his father James Clark the founder of Guide On stepped in and began taking the family on camping trips and other outdoor activities.
George Brown – Armed Services YMCA – Wounded Warrior Battalion George explained that the ASYMCA was founded in 1861 and at Camp Pendleton in 1942. The ASYMCA supports active duty military families. The main theme is stress reduction for families. They provide transportation for families if needed and provide mentoring program for grade school and middle school children.
Andrea Stone – Rescue Task Force Rescue Task Force provide backpacks for wounded soldiers returning to the US. Andrea informed us that most severely wounded are transported from the field to Germany back to the US within 3 to 4 days and their average age is 20. They arrive in the US hospital with no change of clothes or personal effects. The backpacks are given to these soldiers and the back packs contain clothing, personal hygiene items and entertainment items such as CD players, magazines and other items to help pass the time in the hospital.
Jimmy Valentine – Home Front San Diego Home Front is a 100% volunteer organization of about 70 men and women assisting families in the E-3 to E-5 rank. Jimmy explained that they provide food to these families assist with auto repairs or even providing automobiles to those families that don’t have automobiles. They also assist in financial matters with car or credit card payments for these families. These are normally a one-time assistance however.
Kate Wheeler – United Through Reading Kate explained that United Through Reading was established in 1989 by a Navy wife and mother whose daughter did not know her father after returning from active duty overseas. The organization films a deployed parent reading a book or story to their child. The CD is then sent home where the child can watch and read along with the deployed parent.
Phil Landis – Veteran’s Village of San Diego Veteran’s Village provides assistance to veterans. 40% of the homeless in San Diego are veterans. They provide housing for approximately 157 veterans in San Diego. In addition to the Village they organize the annual Stand Down program to provide assistance to those that are not living in the village. A major concern, according to Phil, is the number of women needing assistance and the rapid increase they have seen over the last 2 years.
