The meeting for “The Best Rotary Club in the District” was called to order by President Mel Gallegos. Steve Seligman lead us in the Pledge of Alligance. Invocation was given by Amanda Huynh, quoting John F. Kennedy. Our song of the day was the national anthem lead by Mary Engles and Jim Mulvaney.
Jessica Harris and a few others from Rotaract joined us this morning along with several other guests and visiting Rotarians.

Chris Carsons sent around a sign-up sheet for undefeated USD Football game on November 1st.

Jessica Harris, President of Rotaract, announced Mingle @ Menghai, a beer and wine tasting event on November 1st from 7:00pm – 10:00pm. Tickets cost $35 per person.

Dave Ferguson and Jonathan Stone promoted Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament. Due to state of economy, we had a few cancellations so we are shy on players. We are in need of volunteers for morning check-ins.

Jonathan Stone gave us update on Jeff’s surgery. Jeff will need to have two more surgeries. He will be in hospital for next couple of weeks and are requesting no phone calls. Jonathan will keep us posted on need for food deliveries.

Mary Engles reminded us that October is Physical Therapy Month.

Judy Bambace introduced our Student of the Month, Ashley Cantall, from San Diego High School. Ashley is the #1 student in her senior class. Ashley was presented with an award and a $60 Target Gift Card.
This week’s speaker was Dr. John Reed. Dr. Reed is the President/CEO of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, has authored over 700 research papers during his career, and sits on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. Dr. Reed earned both his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he conducted research and helped oversee a hospital laboratory. He was recruited as a scientist for Burnham in 1992, where he established a research program into the field of apoptosis, or cell death, which is crucial in developing therapies to treat cancer.
