THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Our speaker this week was Virginia “Ginny” Uybungco, Executive Director of the Marine Mammal Park Conservancy. She is a local San Diegan who attended Patrick Henry High School and USD Law for Environmental/Conservation Law. The Marine Mammal Park Conservancy is a recently formed organization of all volunteers. The Park is located in La Jolla, in an area commonly called the Children’s Pool. Uybungco presented the history of the Children’s pool, from the construction of the wall in 1931 to today, when it has recently become an eco-tourism center. She shared five key points that support the usage as an eco-tourism sight.

                  1. Save Tax Money (Removing the seals would cost $866,000 per year)
                  2. Restore and represent the values of San Diego as a conservation community
                  3. Sustainable visitor attraction
                  4. Green & Blue movement/industries
                  5. Scientific and educational opportunities

Uybongco also shared interesting facts about the harbor seals we can observe on this beautiful stretch of coast. This seals do not migrate and their life span is 20-25 years. When seals hang out on the beach it is called “hauling out.” In 1999, the seals began to give birth on the beach which classified the site an a protected wildlife area.
