Our speaker was Dr. Daniel L. Gross, Executive Vice President, for Sharp Hospital Acute Healthcare. Dr. Gross spoke about the H1N1 flu. Annually, 200,000 people nationwide are hospitalized by the flu and 36,000 people die. It is believed that the H1N1 virus comes from pigs hence the name swine flu. In fact the flu comes from pigs, humans and birds. The first known case of the swine flu was on February 24, 2009 a 6 month old girl from northern Mexico was diagnosed with the swine flu. On June 11, 2009 the authorities declared a phase 6 pandemic of the swine flu. By July 1, 2009 one million people were infected. On August 25, 2009 the authorities estimated 50% of population would catch swine flu. Hopefully, this will not be the case. In Africa deaths occurring form the swine flu are not being reported which could affect the data.
Dr. Gross asked – is the worse over? He answered only time will tell. He did mention that we are going into the holiday season and we should be very careful when we meet with other people. Dr. Gross mentioned that the H1N1 flu has flu like symptoms, fever, coughing and shortness of breath. An atypical symptom is frequent bowel movements. The testing for the disease is not 100%. The medicine Tamiflu and Relenza decreases the duration of the flu. If you are high risk, obese, diabetic, have other illnesses, then it is recommended you get vaccinated as soon as possible.
