Week's Bulletin Was Written
By Wendy L. Patrick
This week the pledge was led by Frank DeFrancesco, and the invocation was given by Bonnie Wasserman, who did a fantastic job reciting a quote from Ghandi. The song of the day was another Christmas favorite, “Jingle Bells,” and was enthusiastically led by Mary Engels and Roaslie Kramm. Everyone was pleased to have a lively song where the entire room knows all of the words!
Pete McGuire introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. Guests included Sasha Leal, Tom Lewis, Alyssa Neubarth, Kandice Friedman, Kelly Terry, Linda Henry, Ester Araujo, Audrey Coleman, and several prospective new members: David Hughes, Kelly Bemer, and Allison Hooper. Our visiting Rotarian was Paul Nestor from Club 33.
Sergeant at Arms, Scott Carr, presented the weekly raffle and solicited the weekly bitches and brags. Gary Green paid to give several brags about several other Rotary members who had contributed much to the club. As usual, he was enormously complementary of his fellow Rotarians. He gave kudos to Jonathan Stone for his constant support of Jeff Houge in his battle with the brain clots that he almost died with, and kudos to Jeff Olson for meeting a very difficult goal in such a short time exceeding our Project Responsibility Project in TJ. Also to long time Rotarian Pat Moore who is now raising her husband's grandson and is not available to come to meetings on Wednesday mornings but still stepped up and contributed $500.00 towards Project Responsibility to put us over the top. Gary also gave praise to his wife Karen for all of her efforts as President during her first 6 months in office. A gift certificate from a fancy La Jolla restaurant was auctioned off and sold for over $100.
Robyn Bottomley thanked Melissa Chapman for graciously hosting the Christmas party which as many of us can attest to was a wonderful party on Saturday night. She let us know the good news that Melissa has offered her home to us next year also!
We will be having our Spring Fundraiser at The Abbey on April 3, 2010, and the organizational meeting will be January 7, 2010.
Jeff Olson updated us on Project Responsibility and even with the short turn around time, we exceeded our goal.
Regarding RI Donations, Mel Galegos reported that we are doing a great job of meeting our goal.
Sandra Schrift asked for submissions for the Rotary peacemaker award. Also, she announced that she will be collecting Christmas cards again to recycle – donating them to St. Jude.
The club will be dark for the next two weeks
This week’s speaker was Andres Fichhorn, General Manager of Sea World. He provided an educational overview of the park and an enormous amount of background information, and his presentation concluded with a live showing of several animals from the park which were paraded around the room much to the delight of the audience!
