This week’s Bulletin was written by Karen Green
Maureen called the meeting to order and began with a joke. It was funny and everybody agreed that it is much better than the “Rotary Moment.” An inspirational invocation was delivered by new member [identity forthcoming] and Bobbie Spinner-Flack led the pledge to the flag. Keeping with a patriotic theme the song was led by Linda Jalving and a reluctant Jim Mulvaney.
The energy of the club is enhanced each week by visitors, visiting Rotarians and potential members. This week’s visitors were introduced by Mary Engles.
•
Larry Nuffer announced the winner of the Mayoral Derby.
•
Mary Engles and Dave Archambault won $50 each. Mary quickly tried to spend the money by bidding on two Starlight Opera tickets. Larry also implemented the “Name That Rotarian” contest. Duane Horning was the first recruited contestant. The answer to the question of “Which Rotarians are dual citizens?” was Michael Clarkson and Matt McGowan. This new topic is a great way to generate money for our projects as well as to become more familiar with our fellow Rotarians.
•
Mel Gallegos was fined for celebrating a birthday and Ron Erbetta bragged about his recent three week trip to Italy.
•
Community Services Chair Mike Whitehurst announced upcoming events. He asked for support of the MWR or the USS Reagan Fund.
•
There was also a request for donations at the next Blood Drive. Two visiting Rotarians from the Mission Valley Club challenged us to a contest in participation in this drive. They already have 25% of their members signed up to give blood.
•
Another charity event is the Relay for Life is a 24 hour event on August 27-28th for the American Cancer Society. The club already has approximately 14 participants and we would like several more. Ron Erbetta also announced a fund raiser on the Midway at 7:00pm on Saturday August 27th. This event is to raise funds for disadvantaged youth.
Foundation Chair Ron Erbetta had the privilege of honoring Cynthia Sener as the newest Paul Harris Fellow. He reminded all Rotarians that they now can receive a Paul Harris Fellow with only a $500 donation because of the matching funds program. This is a great chance to make a donation and become a Paul Harris Fellow.
The fourth annual golf tournament sponsored by our club is going to be on Friday, October 14th. Melissa Blackburn is soliciting donations, golfers and participation in this exciting event. It promises to be the best event yet.
•
Linda Jalving asked that we go to the Rotary website and update our personal information.
•
Maureen announced that the cost of the breakfast at the University Club meeting place is going up to $12.50. The new cost will be added to your quarterly bill.
•
Andrea Espinoza, Rotaract President, challenged the club to another Rotary/Rotaract volleyball competition. Martin Blair is requesting that all “tall and athletic” Rotarians help the Rotarians beat the Rotaracts once again this year. The event will be at Martin Blair’s condo in Carlsbad.
•
Also, mark your calendars for a Benefit Comedy on August 25th for the Thousand Smiles Fund. The event will be held at the Sycuan Casino.
