This Week’s Bulletin Was Written By Tom Sayer

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Past President Ron Erbetta filled in for the traveling Maureen, and got us underway promptly.  Jerrilyn Malana delivered the invocation and Susan Bleicher led the pledge.  Jim and Linda led us in song.  Karen Green welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Be sure to fill out the update forms included in your recent Rotary Billing Invoice.

• Please complete the survey form that has been distributed via e-mail and hard copy at the last couple meetings.  This form will be used to improve our club and provide the type of services you expect out of our fine organization.

• The Foundation Seminar will take place on September 10, 2005.  This seminar is considered the single most important seminar in Rotary and will help you learn what Rotary is doing and where your generous donations and contributions are applied.

• The Golf Tournament is October 14, 2005 at the Coronado Golf Course benefiting Voices for Children.  There are plenty of sponsorship opportunities available and golfers can still sign up.  See Melissa Blackburn or Jonathan Stone for more information.

• August 27 at 3:00 p.m. -- Come on down to Martin Blair's Carlsbad Pad for the 2nd Annual SD Downtown Rotary vs. Rotaract Volleyball Tournament. We'll be playing for the Blair Cup (so far, it's 2-0 in favor of the Rotary :[ ) and bragging rights!

THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Nancy Vaughan introduced our speakers this morning, D. Michael Kalichman & Dr. Larry Hinnman from the Center For Ethics In Science & Technology.  Their topic, "The Future of Stem Cell Research in San Diego," generated the expected lively discussion.  What seemed most poignant about the presentation was the repeated assertion that reasonable men and women can have vastly different views on how we as a society should respond to the ethical dilemas presented by scientific advances.  There do not seem to be any clear answers and the best we can do is to continue to engage is the civil debate over these issues.
