This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Rosalie Kramm
Our dear President Maureen is back from India. She greeted us with the Nameste – a Hindu greeting. “All that is the highest ability, thought, and action in me, greets all that is the highest ability, thought, and action in you. Together may we realize an awareness that is beyond our individual experience.” Maureen promises to be a speaker one week and give us details of her trip along with 600 photographs she took. Steve Espino gave a very inspiring invocation about kindness, and Chris Carstens led us with the Pledge of Alliance. Our song of the day was, Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, and everyone sang beautifully. Peter McGuire introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.
•

Nancy Vaughan introduced this week’s speaker, Michael (Mic) Hager, Ph.D., from the San Diego Natural History Museum. Mic has been with the San Diego Natural History Museum since 1991. The museum’s mission is to “Interpret the natural world through research, education, and exhibits.” There is a tremendous amount of research that is done with 35 members in their research department. The museum is instrumental in conservation throughout Southern California and Baja. One of their goals is to promote bi-national diversity and inspire people to respect the environment. The San Diego Natural History Museum has teamed with scientists in Mexico to educate and do research. Because of the grand efforts of the museum and their Mexican counterparts, all of the islands of the Sea of Cortez are now known internationally as a World Heritage Site and are environmentally protected. You can take backpack trips, join in on workshops, go on wine tasting trips in Santa Thomas, Ensenada, and participate in a multitude of programs through the museum. The museum has a 300-seat large-format theater and showcases two to four films a year. They get 300,000 visitors annually. The museum has an extensive lending library of fossils for teachers in the San Diego community. They have a collection of California wildflower portraits by A.R. Valentien.
Fossil Mysteries, a new exhibit, will open in July 2006 showcasing regional fossils from the last 75 million years. The Dead Sea Scrolls are coming in July 2007.
Everyone is encouraged to go visit the museum and see the interesting exhibits.
Next week’s speaker is Chef Larry – It should be a delicious meeting.
