THIS WEEK’S MEETING

May each of you live every moment of your lives  - Thomas Jefferson

The Ides of March presented us with a spirited meeting, beginning with a stirring rendition of Irish Eyes, led by Jim Mulvaney, Linda Javling and Rosalie Kramm.

Announcements

This week marks World Rotoract Week.  We were joined by 12 Rotoract Club members, including Andrea Espinosa, President and Past President, Evan Papel.  Andrea reported on increasing membership and fundraising trends; with the application of funds to worthy causes including polio mitigation and homebuilding.  Martin Blair was recognized for the great level of support which he provides to Rotoract. Our members are reminded that attendance at a Rotoract meeting is one of the requirements for achieving a blue badge.

Speaking of the blue badges, Karney Stefan was awarded a blue badge for completing all of the required activities.

Jay Sener welcomed our two newest Rotarians, Christine Fitzgerald and Michael Giddings, who were inducted today. They have already distinguished themselves; Christine by making an immediate contribution of serving on the fundraiser committee; and Mike, a dentist, who had previously performed an emergency “life saving” procedure for President Maureen.

Eileen Henessey and Melissa Blackburn then introduced the executives from Voices for Children, an organization that provided some local success stories of actions taken to rescue Tommy, Haley and Josh from destitute situations.  On behalf of our club, Melissa and Elaine presented Voices for Children with a check for $10,000.00.

GOSPEL BRUNCH: March 26, 2006 at House of Blues on Fifth Avenue.  The deadline to sign up was March 7.  Contact Susan Davis for further details.  SDavisDacam@aol.com

ESSAYS/HOMEWORK: The District would like us to submit essays from Rotarians who have been Rotarians for 2 or less years... about why you joined Rotary, or something that made a big impact on you with Rotary, or why you appreciate our club, or a project that meant a lot to you, why you joined Rotary... something like that.  For those that qualify, Maureen asks that we email her our essays by March 20.  maureen.eberle@visitsandiego.com.

DISTRICT COUNCIL: Maureen called out for volunteers for the District Meeting scheduled for May 27th.  Volunteers are needed for Beverage, Beer, Raffle and Registration Coordinators.  Cynthia Sener has volunteered to handle Display Coordinator duties.  Please forward pictures to her at csener@hanleywood.com.

Sgt.-At-Arms

• This week’s raffle was a basket of Irish delights just in time for St. Patty’s Day.

• Gary Green donated two tickets to the NCAA Session 1 at Cox Arena and Larry raffled them off to Tom Sayer for an $80 donation to the Club.

This Week’s Speaker

Nancy Vaughn introduced our program, Dr. Robert Biter. Dr. Biter is the Department Chair of the OB-GYN Group at Scripps Encinitas Hospital; and spoke of his commitment to “Her Heart’s Wish”, a volunteer organization which he founded in Hershey, Pennsylvania some years ago.  The genesis of Her Heart’s Wish was his involvement with a terminally ill cancer patient, Beth Daniels, whereby he resolved to improve the lives of those  women who are stricken with disease and given two or less years to live.  Dr. Biter provided us with the aforementioned quotation  and an inspirational look into the meaning of our last days, as made possible by the volunteers of Her Heart’s Wish.  The funds which they raise are used to provide travel and  expenses to accommodate the patients’ last wish.  For more information, go to their website at www.herheartswish.org.

Next week’s speaker is Kathy Kachur, Exec. Director Citizen Diplomacy Council.  Have a  great week!
