This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Luke Hartley

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

This morning the clouds hung over San Diego, but the rains held off as we kicked off the meeting with an invocation about global consciousness from Linda Jalving.  _______ led us in the pledge and then Rosalie Kramm and Linda Jalving led us in a rousing rendition of Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.  I’m not sure whether it was the comspicuous absence of Jim Mulvaney or just the catchy familiarity of the tune – but the crew seemed to sing just a bit more confidently than usual.  Ken Juen introduced our many guests, visiting Rotarians and visiting Rotaractors.

Following the introductory remark by club president Maureen Eberle, Jay Sener inducted our newest member, Charlie Isham, who was sponsored by Luke Hartley.  Charlie is a San Diego native who went to Point Loma High School with Jay Sener before joining the Army, where he served overseas.  He has a Master’s degree in education, has founded a number of schools in Florida, and has recently returned to San Diego, where he works independently providing computer-based learning tools for disadvantaged youths.  Welcome to the Club, Charlie!

Sgt.-At-Arms

• Sgt. Larry was running a pool for the Master’s golf tournament this morning, and he drew three “players” the lucky winners were Jenny Goodman (Tiger Woods), Carol Jensen (David Toms) and Scott Carr (Jose Maria Olazabal).

• Ron Erbetta threw in a few bucks for bringing his Boston driving to the Finest City by driving the wrong way down a one-way street – he defended himself by explaining just how inconvenient it would have been to drive the other way!

• Shawn Bernard bought a packet of drink coupons for Southwest Airlines for 20 bucks.

• And…nobody was willing to shell out for tickets to see “Violet Hour” at the Old Globe!  I know someone will want them next week!

• Susan Bleicher paid for celebrating 9 years of marriage.

• Frank De Francesco bowled a perfect 300 game last weekend.

Announcements

April 10 Board Meeting:  Maureen invited all to come to the Board meeting this coming Monday at Mighty 1090 (XX Radio) on Nobel Drive in La Jolla.  She reminds that this is a Blue Badge requirement – and as one who attended last month’s meeting – I got a secret pleasure in having to sneak the beer bottles out of the room in a paper bag – felt like high school all over again – well…sort of!

April 11 District Council:  Please sign up to attend this event at 6 pm at the La Jolla Marriott.  This meeting will feature the finals of the Four Way Test Speech Contest.

Thousand Smiles: Maureen read a thank you note received from Thousand Smiles – our donation will help change the lives of 3-4 kids who will be saved from a life living with a serious deformity.

Fundraiser Auction Items:  Caroline Chen added another plea for silent auction items.  We still have much less than 50% Club participation to date, the target goal is 100% and the deadline is April 15th.

District Conference First Pitch:  for $10 you can buy a raffle ticket that will give you the chance to throw out a first pitch at a Padres game.  May 28, 2006 will be Rotary Day, and the raffle for the first pitch will be drawn on May 17 and will be announced in Quickbits on May 19.

Matching Grant:  Lynn Hamilton announced that we have secured as a club a matching grant to support the Foundation of Love in its effort to combat AIDS in Africa.  The grant will help multiply out club’s $6,000 donation into $17,000, and the total donation to the project will be $22,000!!  Way to go – this is the Foundation at work – great plug from Ron Erbetta to earmark your Foundation donations (2 for 1 Paul Harris Fellows) to go directly to support this matching grant.

CLUB ASSEMBLY

Today out program was a “state of the club” assembly, and we heard form the chairs of all of the various committees regarding our ongoing activities.  We heard of so many successes that it is impossible to list them all, but the general overview is:

• Foundation – Ron Erbetta gave a history of the RI Foundation (which started with a $500 donation to help crippled children) and let us know that the total foundation donations over the years for Rotary are over $1.68 Billion!  Our club has given approx. $194,000 dollars to the foundation since we chartered.

• Club Services – Our attendance is abour 56% for the year – which is better than last year’s 55% but isn’t good enough – Rotary actually required a 60% attendance – tell your delinquent friends to come to the club!  Additionally, don’t forget to sign in when you arrive.

• Treasurer – Mike Whitehurst gave the rpoprt on the club’s finances for Don Lang – who is buried in tax returns.  Don has been our treasurer for 8 years, and everything is in tip-top shape.  Remember – if you make up a meeting at another club, you can get $5 rebate on your breakfast fees.  So – make up your meetings!

• Community Service – Bobbi Spinner-Flack told of all the great work we’ve done in the community – from the Veteran’s Stand down to the upcoming Home Building.  Great work club for all your work in the community!

• International – Lynn Hamilton and Steve Waterman shared all of the successes in international, including the matching grant, Christmas drive in Tijuana, and Tijuana home building – which may soon become “community service”.

• …what else to say – the club has had a great year – has great leaders and we’re looking forward to the coming year with Carol Jensen at the helm.  Thanks all for your great work!

Next week’s meeting will feature Barbara Ayers, San Diego Fire Dept. CERT program.  Have a  great week!
