President Maureen
Eberle promptly called the meeting
to order at 7:30 a.m.
After the invocation and
pledge (which yours truly missed
by virtue of driving to my office
instead of to the meeting-oops),
the group made a game effort at
Sing[ing] a Song by the Carpenters.
A few lines sounded like
the original tune!
Pete McGuire introduced
our many guests of the day including
the seven Ecuadorian graduate
students.
-
Sandra Schrift is taking charge of assisting
with rebuilding the New Orleans
library and is asking for book
donations.
Please bring any books
you care to donate to the next
few meetings and she will arrange
shipment to New Orleans.
-
Rotarians at Work is coming up quickly-April
29th.
The volunteers for the
Rebuilding Together team have
a choice of two different shifts. Please sign up in advance so the team leaders
can plan accordingly.
Also, if you have items
to donate, the team is looking
for towels, comforters, sheets,
and other household items.
-
The Tijuana Homebuilding team will also
be putting in their blood, sweat
and tears on the same day. Limited spots are open for this worthy project.
-
Vocational Service day sign-up sheets
were passed around.
Please make sure you
sign up for this May 3rd event.
The choices include the
Salk Institute, the Courthouse,
San Diego Hospice and the Port
of San Diego.
-
A reminder that you can sign up for
the District Conference on line.
-
Jay Sener gave a belated membership
report.
The club is now 109 strong
having lost ten persons and
gained 13 (with 4 in the waiting). Great job to all of you on the membership committee.
Yes, you!
-
Scott Car previewed our new website
format which you have already
experienced first hand if you
are reading this current bulletin.
Looks fantastic, Scott.

Nancy Vaughn advised the group that
on May 31st, our speaker will
be Vice-Admiral Martin, a POW
from Vietnam. She wanted us all to have sufficient notice
that we will do a red, white
and blue theme for that day. Any other ideas on how to honor our service
men and women are welcome.
Larry Nuffer took it easy on us
this week and only had a few minor
fines.
He also auctioned off some
tickets to the Symphony courtesy
of Ron Erbetta.
Nancy Vaughan introduced
Carl Cohen the new Superintendent
of the San Diego Unified Schools.
Mr. Cohen replaced the
controversial Alan Bersin.
Mr. Cohen provided an entertaining
discussion of his vision and goals
for the schools in San Diego.
Sister Martin’s profound
impact on Mr. Cohen is evident
and clearly has helped shape his
approach to education and discipline. I think we can all agree with Mr. Cohen that
“good schools stand for
something.”
We wish Mr. Cohen success
as he works to make our schools
better.
Next week’s
speaker will be Carol Lam of the
Attorney General’s Office.
