THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Maureen Eberle called the meeting to order and invited Gary and Karen Green to lead us in the pledge and deliver an invocation.  Gary had really planned ahead for this, as it turned out to be their 25th wedding anniversary.  He came complete with flowers and a framed plaque which contained this morning’s Invocation.  Perhaps out most romantic Rotary moment to date!  Then Jim Mulvaney, Rosalie Kramm, Steve Espino led us in, Its Been A Hard Day’s Night.  Pete McGuire introduced our many guests of the day.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Sandra Schrift is taking charge of assisting with rebuilding the New Orleans library and is asking for book donations.  Please bring any books you care to donate to the next few meetings and she will arrange shipment to New Orleans.
  2. Rotarians at Work is coming up quickly-April 29th.  The volunteers for the Rebuilding Together team have a choice of two different shifts.  Please sign up in advance so the team leaders can plan accordingly.  Also, if you have items to donate, the team is looking for towels, comforters, sheets, and other household items.
  3. The Tijuana Homebuilding team will also be putting in their blood, sweat and tears on the same day.  Limited spots are open for this worthy project.
  4. Vocational Service day sign-up sheets were passed around.  Please make sure you sign up for this May 3rd event.  The choices include the Salk Institute, the Courthouse, San Diego Hospice and the Port of San Diego.
  5. Bobby Daniels brought some students who participated in the Model UN Project sponsored by our Club.  Students assume the roles of UN delegates and debate a real life crisis in the hopes of finding peaceful solutions to the world’s problems.
  6. A reminder that you can sign up for the District Conference on line.
  7. Susan Bleicher asked for volunteers to host students participating in the Rotary Int’l Music Camp.  Students aged 16-21 will need homes from July 18th to August 9th.  They will be occupied during the day but will need a breakfast and dinner and a place to sleep.  Please contact Susan if you are interested.
  8. Paul Downey invited us to attend the Senior Center Heroes Luncheon.
  9. New members James Bickford and Jeff Christie were inducted this morning.  Welcome!
  10. Nancy Vaughn advised the group that on May 31st, our speaker will be Vice-Admiral Martin, a POW from Vietnam.  She wanted us all to have sufficient notice that we will do a red, white and blue theme for that day.  Any other ideas on how to honor our service men and women are welcome.

SGT. AT ARMS

Tana Cleaves was the winner of the “how many pretzel in the jar” contest, guessing closest to the magic number of 269.  It was, after all, National Pretzel Day or some such thing…

Pat Cowett received an Outstanding Jurist award.

Frank De Francesco celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary.

Mary Dawe’s daughter completed a triathlon.

Tom Sayer’s parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER

Carol Lam, the Attorney General for the Southern District of California, was our speaker this week.  She spoke mainly on the struggle for priorities between immigration issues and the rest of the things for which the AG office is responsible.

Next week is Vocational Services Day.
