This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Abbi Kelly

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

After President Maureen Eberle called the meeting to order, Steve Espino started off the meeting with an inspirational poem that reminded us about how much our attitude affects our circumstances, "If you think you are beat, you are..." Jenny Goodman lead us in the pledge. Our song of the day was the Star-Spangled Banner  which our very own superstar Linda Jalving will be singing at an upcoming Padres game! How exciting!

SGT. AT ARMS

Larry Nuffer was drawing numbers for winners to represent each of the final three contestants up to be the next American Idol!!! Ken Juen and Tom Sayer insisted that the newest Idol had already been picked. Well with all the fans in the room they were quickly corrected AND fined! Ouch double whammy. Dave's son just graduated from college! Yeah! Apparently Joe Marshall was seen eating peanuts and popcorn at the Padres game with the Caddyshack and Stripes star himself -- Bill Murray. Joe said now he knows what its like to be a superstar with all the second glances, finger pointing and eyes lighting up. Did he say someone asked him for HIS autograph just because he was with Bill?

NEW BLUE BADGER

Jay Sener introduced our newest Blue Badge member Jeff Christie! He is already getting involved in co-chairing the membership committee for next term! Congratulations Jeff!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Many thanks to Joe Marshall and Steve Espino for spear heading this year's fabulous Fundraiser event  that took place last Saturday, May 20 on the Berkley. Everything was so well organized and tastefully done thanks to committee members and all of our generous Rotarians and sponsors who contributed. Caroline Chen was a silent auction mastermind keeping us all informed of the member contributions. She sent out daily, I mean weekly, emails encouraging us to get our donations in throughout the months prior. Great job - it really paid off. Apparently the funds raised exceeded $17,000!!! Way to go!!! Steve Espino auctioned off a "secret prize" which turned out to be 3 cases of wine and 1 case of champagne left over from the event. Lucky Jenny Goodman was the highest bidder. Hmmm...what do you think? Maybe she will be having a little get together over at her place soon? Huh Jenny...nudge nudge!

  2. Mary Dawe presented the "Student of the Month" of the Monarch schools to Marcus Golden who graduates on June 9th. He is planning on continuing his education at San Diego City College focusing on getting his Associates in Photography. Congratulations Marcus!

  3. Mike Whitehurst continued to promote the Rotaract "Ace of Cards" event that will be raising money to help aid in providing clean water for children in Africa. Mike announced that our club would contribute $1000 to the cause. A special thanks goes out to all of the Rotaracts who took the time to help us out with registration among other things at our fundraiser event Saturday.

  4. Chris Carstens promoted the upcoming Winery Lunch trip to Temecula. He assured everyone that there would be lots of singing on the trip up and back! If you can join in get the details on the web site for June 4. Sure to be a great time! Is someone bringing the Karoke machine

  5. Heather Xitco invited RYLA participants Stefan, Diana and Khazie to the meeting to tell us about how RYLA has enriched their lives and created more opportunities for them.

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER

Ron Erbetta with special guest Mike Stillman illustrated how the funds we raise through Rotary are distributed. There are three different areas -- the Foundation programs of Rotary International such as Polio Plus, the Club programs such as Monarch, the Senior Center, etc and the Club Treasury which funds our supplies and administrative costs. Our club goal is to have each person donate at least $125 per year. If a person donates $1000 they are awarded a Paul Harris fellowship.  Have a GREAT MEMORIAL weekend and take a moment to honor all those soldiers that gave their lives to protect our freedom and the freedom of those throughout the world.
