The
crowd was thin but lively. Newly inducted President Carol Jensen took the podium and was greeted by an enthusiastic and loud round of applause from the membership. She gave an inspiring invocation and introduced Mel Gallegos who, after sharing a request we remember our men and women all over the world who are defending our country, led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our new Sgt. at Arms, Rosalie Kramm and Songstress Linda Jalving sang us through the first verse of Joy to the World (no, not the announcement of Christ the Savior rather the tune about our friend Jeremiah, the Bullfrog!) Everyone
sang loudly and sat down smiling!
Sgt. at Arms Rosalie Kramm conducted a “free drawing” for World Cup fans, acknowledged some birthdays and wedding anniversaries and had Gary Green auction two VERY FINE tickets to see Wicked. The pair went for a whopping $200! Frank DeFrancesco has some great news which you will have to attend the next meeting to find out about!
Peter introduced guests with special note given to Heather Rosing (Scott’s wife), Linda Riley (Exec.Dir. of JDRF) and Del Mar Rotary President Vicki Beriman.
Carol Jensen gave a report on some of her experiences
at the Rotary International Convention and announced that Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation would be this year’s charitable organization. Linda
Riley made a few remarks about the work of JDRF and pointed out that most
of the work of the foundation is done by volunteers. To date JDRF
has raised $1Billion to research a cure for juvenile diabetes, $2.7M of
which has been raised right here in San Diego!
Joe Ciokon gave a great report about the upcoming “Stand
Down” event being held the weekend of July 14 – 16. Stand
Down began right here in San Diego! More than 200 American cities
have adopted the program and annually hold a Stand Down event of their
own! Comfort Kits (toiletries) can be purchased for $6.00 each. These
Comfort Kits will be given out to the Veterans attending this year’s
event. Volunteers are needed for Saturday and Sunday’s Breakfast
Service. Sign up with Joe.
Mel Gallegos and Maureen Eberle gave a report about the
Rotary Foundation, the GREAT work done with the monies donated and gave
special recognition to Heather Rosing who is now our newest Paul Harris
Fellow, thanks to her loving husband Scott! This year’s Club
goal is to have each club member participate by contributing a minimum
of $125 to the SHARE program. Go club! That’s only $10.41
a month for the year or $31.25 per quarterly statement. Let’s
just have Don add that as a line item on our quarterly bill (it could be
noted as “optional”) and we’ll meet our goal. What
say you?
Linda Jalving noted this year’s goal for attendance
is 75%. We currently rank at the embarrassing low “51st place” out
of the 60 clubs in our district. We may be “the smartest and
best looking Club in the whole world” but we set no records at attending
meetings! Remember to give Linda your make-up slip when you attend
other club meetings and provide her with your new address as soon as possible
in the event you move.
Nancy Vaughn gave the Program Chair report and discussed “how” speakers
are selected. Thanks Nancy! We are very fortunate to have her
continuing in this chair for the upcoming year. Screening for interesting
and qualified speakers is not an easy job!
Lynn Hamilton gave a report on this year’s projects
being considered by the International Services Committee and encouraged
everyone to go see the new film entitled “An Inconvenient Truth”,
narrated by Al Gore.
Peter McGuire and Mary Engles gave the Club Services
report and Dave McKee gave a preliminary Golf Committee report.
Carol reminded everyone of
the Board meeting on Monday the 10th at The Mighty 1090.
