President Carol Jensen promptly started the meeting at 7:33 a.m. Dr. Chris Carstens gave the invocation and reminded us that; “Today is a Tresaure, a new experience we have never had before.” Dan Cleaves led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our dynamic duo, Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney, divided us into two groups and we sang several rounds of “Row, Row, Row your Boat” with harmony.
Larry Nuffer (stepping in for Rosalie), announced the 50/50 winner today - James Bickford. George Mullen won 6 tickets to the annual women't tennis tournament.
Peter welcomed our guests, Rotoracts and visiting Rotarians.
Nancy Vaughan introduced our two speakers from ICAC (International Crimes Against Children) Chris Armstrong, detective with the SD Police and on the ICAC task force, used PowerPoint to explain the many ways that childhood exploitation occurs on the Internet and the measures they take to track down the predators. Some interesting statistics: 75% of the Internet is pornography related. This is a place that is owned by no one and open 24 hours a day. They target children ages 10-17 years of age. Teen girls are the most abused. Many teens are blogging their way on www.whitehouse.com and www.myspace.com The Internet is changing societal norms which exposes children to the pornography. Chat rooms and instant messaging are other popular vehicles. Children can communicate with anyone in the world and realize this is a way to be independent from their parents. www.whitepages.com helps predators locate teen girls’ homes and identify their victims. Detective Armstrong recommends that parents set up a contract with their children about on- line use. If they break the rules, then restrict their privileges on- line. Parents are the first line of defense in protecting their children against the Internet. When you have a complaint for a missing or exploited child, go to www.cybertipline.com .
