THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Carol Jensen promptly started the meeting at 7:33 a.m.  Dr. Chris Carstens gave the invocation and reminded us that; “Today is a Tresaure, a new experience we have never had before.”  Dan Cleaves led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Our dynamic duo, Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney, divided us into two groups and we sang several rounds of “Row, Row, Row your Boat” with harmony.

SGT. AT ARMS

Larry Nuffer (stepping in for Rosalie), announced the 50/50 winner today - James Bickford.  George Mullen won 6 tickets to the annual women't tennis tournament.

GUESTS

Peter welcomed our guests, Rotoracts and visiting Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Jenny Goodman had surgery recently – a get well card was passed around for signing.
  • Pat Cowett and Chris Carstens – chairs of the Social Service committee, awarded a $25 gift certificate to Mike Whitehurst for completing the social needs survey.  The completed surveys indicated that most of us would like to attend theatre events.  They have set up a few show dates for us in the Fall.
  • President Jensen asked us to contribute household items to the USD IPJ scholar coming to San Diego this month.  She needs living room furniture, pots and pans, dishes and glasses, flatware, towels, kitchen “equipment” table and chairs, lines, chest of drawers.  Contact President Jensen if you can donate any of these items.
  • Bobbi Spinner-Flack and Steve Seligman listed all of the projects we engage in each month.  The list was long.
  • Sig Weitzman asked for help to bring donors to the blood drive.
  • Maureen Erberle and Mel Gallegos made a Paul Harris presentation to Tom Sayer (Quest Society) for including this foundation in his estate giving.
  • Maureen stated that the President of Rotary International elect will be the featured speaker at the Foundation Seminar to take place at the Salk Institute.
  • Happy Birthday to Mel Gallegos– August 3.
  • Happy Anniversary to Sig Weitzman– a whopping 45 years!  He regrets not marrying his wife sooner than he did.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Nancy Vaughan introduced our two speakers from ICAC (International Crimes Against Children)  Chris Armstrong, detective with the SD Police and on the ICAC task force, used PowerPoint to explain the many ways that childhood exploitation occurs on the Internet and the measures they take to track down the predators.  Some interesting statistics:  75% of the Internet is pornography related.  This is a place that is owned by no one and open 24 hours a day.  They target children ages 10-17 years of age.  Teen girls are the most abused.  Many teens are blogging their way on www.whitehouse.com and www.myspace.com   The Internet is changing societal norms which exposes children to the pornography.  Chat rooms and instant messaging are other popular vehicles.  Children can communicate with anyone in the world and realize this is a way to be independent from their parents.  www.whitepages.com helps predators locate teen girls’ homes and identify their victims.  Detective Armstrong recommends that parents set up a contract with their children about on- line use.  If they break the rules, then restrict their privileges on- line.  Parents are the first line of defense in protecting their children against the Internet.  When you have a complaint for a missing or exploited child, go to www.cybertipline.com .
