President Carol Jensen rang the meeting to order at 7:31 a.m. Tracy Moran provided the invocation and sagely reminded us of the benefits of investing our time wisely. Ron Erbetta lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We sang "You Are My Sunshine" with the hope that the morning cloud cover would soon disappear.
Rosalie Kramm creatively found a way to lighten a few wallets this morning. Karney Stefan won the opportunity money. Frank DeFrancesco announced a three-way tie for the Chargers tickets. His tiebreaker solution was for the three to guess his age. Jeanne Merrill was the closest with her proffer of fifty. The other two contestants solicitously guessed much lower.
Mary Engles filled in for Pete McGuire in welcoming our guests and visiting Rotarians. John Abbott from the Woodenville Washington Breakfast Rotary Club had the distinction of the farthest traveled guest.

Nancy Vaughan introduced this week's speaker - Garry Ridge, the CEO of the WD-40 Company. Mr. Ridge delivered an entertaining speech outlining his company's leadership model and philosophy. Mr. Ridge noted that since 1997, more people have used WD-40 than used dental floss! (But isn't the 2016th use of the product prevention of cavaties?) The leadership model Mr. Ridge employs is based upon three principles: 1) People 2) Product and 3) Passion. The values of a company drive the behavior in an organization so its important to define your values. Assimilating more to a tribe mentality instead of a team mentality will often yield better results. Leaders need to help the tribe get an "A." Tribes spend more time learning and teaching rather than focusing on winning. Foster "learning moments" rather than focusing on "mistakes" so long as someone doesn't continue having the same "learning moment" over and over. In such a case, it is appropriate to share that employee with the competition. Mr. Ridge received a round of applause when he advised the club that bucking popular trend, the WD-40 Company makes it's product here in the United States and ships it to China. During the question and answer period, Mr. Ridge noted three of the more unusual uses for the product - squirrel repellant, python rescue and cleaning of memorial plaques and grave markers. To learn more about the company's leadership model, go to www.thelearningmoment.net. Next week's speaker will be Paula Cordiero, Dean of the USD School of Leadership and Education. Have a wonderful week. (Picture to be added soon.)
