President Jensen called the meeting to order promptly (even a little early today). Pat Cowett provided the thoughtful invocation and Martin Blair lead us in the Pledge.
We had a full house today. There were numerous guests but surprisingly, only Bill Hughes, was a visiting Rotarian. Its great to meet all the new faces and hope they will join us again soon. A special welcome back extended to Mimi McDowell, a former member, who was visiting after a six plus year absence.
Rosalie Kramm handed down a fine for John Addams birthday and the club sang Happy Birthday in his honor. Bill Poirer was the winner of the raffle for a restaurant gift certificate. Dave Ferguson was fined for violating the club's prohibition on global e-mails for non-club related activity. He gladly paid his fine and further expounded upon the proud achievements of his son. Pat Cowett was fined for her mention in the Wall Street Journal although she tried to claim the reference was to someone other than herself because it was misspelled.

Nancy Vaughan introduced this week's speaker, Paula Cordiero. Ms. Cordiero is the Dean of the School of Learning and Education at USD. We knew we would like this speaker right off when she took a jab at Chris Carstens for inviting her to speak and then not being here today! Ms. Cordiero is very interested in figuring out and fostering how individuals learn. She has spent considerable time focusing on how to provide a conducive learning environment for the new building USD is constructing which wil house Ms. Cordiero's School. She believes in an inter-disciplinary approach to learning and, in fact, thinks it is essential for today's leaders and teachers. She wants to prepare her students as best she can to enable them to implement global problem-solving utilizing a variety of resources. She believes the technology available today must be used to foster and encourage problem solving. A 16 year old today typically has an iPod and many even already have pda's. So if the teachers and leaders cannot also learn to utilize the technology that students use, they will not be able to effectively reach and teach those students. Teachers today must understand the applications of technology and Ms. Cordiero insists upon it in her school. She requires teachers to use technology such as e-mail and personal websites which enables a student to view classes on video, obtain class schedules and assignments online, submit papers and received grades and comments all without generating a single piece of paper. Ms. Cordiero stresses that learning cannot occur in silos. Today's teachers must major in a particular discipline before applying to the Education School. Charter schools are creating a competive atmosphere which is helping to push public schools to better their programs. Ms. Cordiero invites us to drop by the new building when it is completed. Thanks for an interesting presentation. It is clear Ms. Cordiero is passionate about her work. Have a fabulous week everyone.
