Bulletins - 2006 - 09/20/2006

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Jensen called the meeting to order a few minutes ahead of schedule since we had a lot to cover today.  Chris Carstens did a great job as a last second fill-in for the invocation.  Mel Gallegos lead us in the Flag Salute.  The club sang a recognizable verse from Joy to the World.

SGT. AT ARMS

Rosalie Kramm levied a few fines for Carol Jensen's birthday and Melissa Blackburn's anniversary.  Martin Blair also self-fined for his 30th anniversary.  Scott Carr benefitted from being the recipient of today's raffle and also gave some of his winnings right back to celebrate his 3rd wedding anniversary.  Dave Ferguson was fined for his son's appearance on the 3-Up, 3-Down segment of a local sports program.  Dave's son has really cost him some fine money over the last year!  Tom Sayer's son kicked the "winning" field goal for his varsity football team.  Leah Swearingen contributed to our fine pool and gave kudos for the KPBS tour she went on.  Barry Tobias paid up in celebration of one son going off to college and the other son hitting a hole in one!

GUESTS

Jonathon Stone announced our guests this morning and even got Louey, er, Lucy Killea's name right!  We tease him for his pronunciations but we applaud him for his efforts.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Golf Tournament Update:  Need players and more prize donations.  Each member should be helping solicit gift certificates or prize packages from the vendors they frequent.  Come on everyone, lets make this a really successful golf tournament again this year.
  • Karney Stefan gave a report on the Foundation Seminar she attended and encouraged everyone to attend the next time.
  • Hold October 10th open for the next District meeting.  Details on the website.
  • President Jensen advised us that for every $25 dollars a member contributes to the Foundation will qualify them for a raffle ticket for a great prize.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICES REPORT FROM TOM COURTNEY

Tom Courtney gave a speedy report on his recent trip to Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.  He attended 18 rotary events during his trip which really opened up his eyes, mind and heart to the plight of children in impoverished nations.  Teachers in these areas make only about $250 per month but still find it in themselves to contribute their time and money to improving the lives of children.  In many schools, there are typically 50-100 students per classrooms, most without desks or books.  Some schools have to use a lottery to determine which children will even get to attend.  Tom gave a moving presentation and we hope he can come back soon for a more detailed report.  We all want to bring happiness to Africa.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW PRESENTATION

Hennessey Paul Harris AwardMaureen Eberle and Mel Gallegos along with District Governor Philipe Lamoise and President Jensen presented Eileen Hennessey with a Paul Harris Fellow award.  Thanks for all your contributions Eileen, both financial and otherwise.  We are proud to have you as a member of our club.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Chapman Induction

This week we had a "two-fer" when Wyatt and Melissa Chapman were both inducted into the club.  Abby Kelly, George Mullen, Martin Blair along with District Governor Philipe Lamoise and President Jensen officially presented the two to the club. Wyatt and Melissa met in Rotaract and recently married.  Melissa has a long family history with Rotary. We look forward to getting to know them more in the future and welcome them both to the club.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

District GovernorDistrict Governor Philipe Lamoise was our distinguished guest this morning and presented an entertaining report on his adventure thus far as District Governor.  So far so good.  DG Lamoise reiterated the theme of Lead the Way which is not just for the club leaders, but each and every member.  Find your passion and people will follow.  Rotary has 1.2 million human resources which can make achieving otherwise insurmountable obstacles much easier.  The District provides two essential roles.  First, training.  From the President Elect Training Seminars to membership training, there are many resources available to help every club in the District successful.  DG Lamoise reminded us of the Rotary goal of one net member increase for the year.  Our club is doing very well in this regards especially in attracting younger members.  DG Lamoise advised us of a new club initiative being implemented which is geared specifically towards the younger generation of professionals which will give them more flexibillity in meeting.  Second, the District organizes events.  For example, the International Assembly will be taking place here in San Diego for the next several years.  DG Lamoise showed a humorous promo for the District Conference in Ensenada on May 18-20th.  (You can register on line at the District's website).  There will be workshops and social events and the emphasis will be on International Service.  Thanks for taking the time to visit and share with our club, Philipe.  You are doing great so far.
