Bulletins - 2006 - 10/11/2006

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

After calling the meeting to order, President Jensen reminded everyone of the upcoming District Council meeting.  Dave Ferguson gave the invocation and Larry Nuffer lead us in the Flag Salute.  Our song of the morning was the Grand Old Flag.

SGT. AT ARMS

Larry Nuffer filled in for Sargeant at Arms Rosalie Kramm today.  Larry orchestrated the great brownie give-away to raise money for the club.

GUESTS

Pete McGuire introduced our guests this morning.  The Rotarian traveling the farthest was from the Lancaster PA club who was in town to run a national Croquet Tournament.  Abbi Kelly introduced several prospective members.  Great job for membership Abbi and George.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Raul Munoz is this month's recipient of the Student of the Month award.  Raul attends San Diego High School where he is student body president and a member of the varsity volleyball team.  Raul is also active with Upward Bound.  Raul exemplifies the types of students whose hard work should be recognized and applauded.  Congratulations Raul and we know you will be successful following your graduation.  We plan on recruiting you for Rotaract and Rotary in the future!

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

One of our favorite events at Rotary is the New Member Induction.  We love to see our club grow and see the enthusiam and diversity of our newest recruits.  Jeremy Larsen is a native San Diegan and a UCSD Grad.  He has a twenty month old child and one on the way.  He is a financial planner with Smith Barney.  Jeremy likes to surf, golf and also enjoys photography in what little spare time he has.  Jeremy related a nice story regarding why he wanted to become a Rotarian that is summed up with the following quote: Be the change you wish to see in the world.  We welcome you to the club Jeremy and look forward to working with you to be that change.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Jonathon Stone made a plea for more golfers and Gary Green laid on the guilt to prod more hole sponsors.
  • October 23rd will be a social event at La Dolce Vita in La Jolla right next door to Jewels by the Sea (owned and operated by our own Linda Jalving).  Come join us for an evening in Italy.
  • Rick gave us a report on the Tijuana Homebuilding project.  A group went down to Mexico recently and built two homes.  Karny Stefan and Maureen Eberle also experienced a culinary delight of eating chicken feet.  Another group will be organized in April.
  • Maureen Eberle reminded us that the Paul Harris Foundation Dinner is coming up on November 10th.   There are lots of great raffle prizes and each twenty-five dollar ticket will be applied towards a Paul Harris Fellow.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Dr. Teresa Shanahan, the Clinical Director of Lifeline Healthcare, Inc. presented an informative discussion regarding the early warning signs of Alzheimer.  Over 90,000 in San Diego have been diagnosed with this disease and many more are likely undiagnosed.  The reach of the problem extends to all the family and friends of the person suffering from the condition.  The range of problems are more than simply "senior moments" and should be taken seriously.  Dr. Shanahan's organization offers help and assistance in care management, homecare and placement services.  Possible warning signs of Alzheimers include poor or decreased judgment (paying exhorbitant fees to roof your house-twice), difficulty performing simple tasks (how do I turn on my stove?), misplacing things (iron in the fridge), and changes in personality (becoming extremely argumentative or rude).  For more information on this important topic, go to www.lifelinehealthcare.org
