THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Admiral Bruce Boland (Ret.) and John Chalker presented a civilized discussion of the pros and cons regarding the upcoming advisory vote on the use of Miramar as a new airport location.  The Proposition A Ballot debate was informative and each side made good points.  John Chalker provided comment on some things to consider in favor of Prop A include the constraints of our current airport.  Although there is no specific plan in mind yet for Miramar, any eventual plan will have to have military approval.  Since growth is coming and it takes at least 15 years to build an airport, we need to address this situation now.  Miramar is only a basic airfield and training could occur elsewhere.  The airport is the largest single economic engine for San Diego and we cannot ignore the ultimate impact on the economy if we do not expand.

On the flip side, Adm. Bruce Boland talked about the footprint of the proposed airport at Miramar and explained why it would not work because it would require displacement of the Marines.  The Union-Tribune is endorsing a plan that the airport auhority has conceded is not workable . Adding a commercial airport at Miramar would necessitate 115 thousand new cars on the freeways.  Joint use of Miramar will not work because the Marines cannot leave the base.  The noise impacts from 747 airplanes would be significant and impact homes and businesses all the way to the beach.  There would be 130 thousand departures and 130 thousand arrivals daily at the proposed airport compared to ten thousand such arrivals and departures under the current use.  The airport authority refused to allow an ex-officio member of the military to be on the commission studying airport feasibility which is telling.  There are no provisions as to how the new airport would be paid for and the plan for use of Miramar as an airport location is too vague and not workable.

Whichever position you support, please remember to get out and vote on Election Day!!
