Bulletins - 2006 - 11/08/2006

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Jensen timely called the meeting to order.  Gary Green was a last second fill-in for the invocation and he used the time to thank those who helped organize the Golf Tournament.  Mel Gallegos reminded us that the best show of patriotism is to vote and then he lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Linda Jalving lead us in a less than zippy rendition of Zippity Do Dah

SGT. AT ARMS

Gary Green filled in for Rosalie Kramm to levy fines.  Three members were selected for a 24 over/under game for the upcoming Chargers game.  A Temecula dinner for four was auctioned off.  Tickets to the Women's Expo were also auctioned off.

GUESTS

Only a few guests this morning but all were welcomed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Lynn Hamilton and Melissa Chapman gave us an update on the Responsibility christmas project.  Sheets identifying the children participating in the program and their wish lists are being distributed.  The gifts must be brought to the club meeting on December 6th because Melissa will be driving them down to Tijuana after the meeting.  If you do not want to sponsor a particular child, you can contribute $46.00 to help buy a bike for a deserving child.
  • John Addams advised us that the Rolling Readers program was underway and that we had been assigned a first grade class at Webster Elementary School.  John, Mary Engles, Bobbi Spinner-Flack, Pat Cowett and Jenny Goodman will be rotating every Tuesday to read to the children.
  • Maureen Eberle announced an amazing and awesome matching plan for donations to the Rotary Foundation.
  • The Holiday Party will be held at Tom Sayer's home on December 8th.  Hold the date, it will be a lot of fun.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

ConleeNancy Vaughan disclosed a senior moment she had last Friday when she "forgot" to attend the golf tournament.  We all need to keep an eye on her and see if she shows any of the other signs of Alzheimers we recently learned about.  Nancy did remember to introduce our speaker, however.  Roger Conlee is a journalist and has recently written a fiction book (but based upon actual events) based upon the Battle of Guadalcanal.  The book addresses the terror of combat these young soldiers faced and how they dealt with their fears.  Black humor often got them through the worst of times.  The battle raged over five months.  Mr. Conlee spoke of visiting a graveyard with an unknown soldier's tomb with the following inscription: "Another Marine reporting, I've served my time in hell."  Mr. Conlee read several excerpts from his book for us and stuck around afterwards to autograph some copies.  Thanks for an interesting presentation.
