President Jensen called the meeting to order promptly. After the invocation, Jeff Christie lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
With Rosalie detained elsewhere, Jonathan Stone passed around a rather large basket to collect donations for the wounded warriors of Balboa Hospital.
The ever reliable Pete McGuire alerted us to the attendance of several guests, including a Rotarian from Germany (furthest traveled award) and local authors Roger Conlee and Page Jones.
-
President Carol extended many thanks to Tom and Kathy Sayer who welcomed us into their new home (post Scripps Ranch inferno) for the club’s holiday soirée. Kudos to Susan Millard-Davis for planning this wonderful event.
-
Thanks to our club members who turned up in droves (20+) to host the Dec. 12 District Council Dinner. Our performance was stellar, even if the check-in system was not. Mel Gallegos provided a stirring pictorial presentation to complement President Jensen’s overview of our club activities.
-
A reminder from Karny Stefan that if you have nominations for the Peacemaker Award, contact her soon.
-
Club elections will be held next week. On the ballot will be Mike Whitehurst for president (Salt Lake City, here I come!), Mel Gallegos for president-elect and many others.
-
Carol Jensen introduced Deborah Lindholm, founder of the Foundation for Women who in turn introduced two local women who are benefiting from the foundation’s micro-credit program, making gorgeous jewelry.
-
Jonathan Stone reminded everyone to bring in old cell phones for recycling.
In recognition of her ongoing, tremendous contributions of time and energy to the club, AND for making it through all the red hoops, Jenny Goodman was presented with her Blue Badge by Abbi Kelly, Membership Co-chair.
Larry Nuffer introduced Hemingway expert and aficionado David Nuffer, no relation. The elder Nuffer proceeded to dispel 4 myths about the Nobel prize-winning Ernest Hemingway. Despite what opinions you’ve formed prior, Hemingway did write effectively about women (Pilar in For Whom the Bell Tolls, Liz in Up In Michigan), unarguably compiled a full body of literature, was not a bully or an egomaniac. Other factoids according to Nuffer: The best book on bullfighting – Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon; Hemingway served in 3 wars and liberated the Ritz Hotel in Paris in WWII; there is no evidence that Hemingway had cats while living in Key West; Hemingway had 22,000 books in his library; and The Old Man and the Sea is almost the perfect novel.
Next Week
We’ll be celebrating a few of the organizations we support throughout the year, including Senior Community Centers, the Tomorrow Project and Monarch School. Visit the ATM before you come because they’ll be loads of creative, holiday gifts available for purchase.
