Bulletins - 2007 - 01/09/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jack Gilbert

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Mike Whitehurst called the meeting to order. Our invocation as led by Margaret Oppliger, the pledge of Allegiance by George Mullen, and Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving led us all in a quite pathetic rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

SGT. AT ARMS

There was a raffle, there were fines, there were brags, there were no bitches, and there was an auction. Much fun was had by all.

GUESTS

Guests included prospective members, Rotaract, and visiting Rotarians including Assistant Governor Carl Lower.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • January is Rotary Awareness Month. As part of that Gary McElroy updated us on a trip earlier this month taken by him and several members to Ensenada in which (for the second year) we joined with other Rotary Clubs in packing 900 bags of foodstuffs and distributing them with clothes and toys (the toys being funded by our Rotary). The day of contribution ended in a Fiesta and fellowship.

  • Governors-Elect from around the world are coming to San Diego for training this month. You can check out our website for information. You can sign up to be a greeter on the 13th or to participate in other events surrounding their visit.

  • It is time for the second annual Peacemaker Award. Sandra Shrift and Karny Stefan need our support by sending them names of any nominees you may have for those who have made a difference in bringing harmony and peace to our community. The winner will be recognized, and may even speak, at our Rotary in February.

  • Deborah Lindholm, President of Foundation for Women, will be reporting on her recently completed trip to three African nations and the impact of micro-credit in Africa this Friday (January 11th) at a lunch at the La Jolla Country Club. You can find out more by going to the Foundation for Women website or by contacting Leah Swearingen.

  • Karen Green announced that the Spring Fundraiser is set for May 10th at the Children’s Museum. The theme will be Imagining the World from the Eyes of a Child. It is not too soon for silent auction items to be offered. Much fun will be had. More details to follow.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH PRESENTATION

Student of the Month

The Student of the Month Award was presented by Nancy Vaughan to Aana Myers who was introduced by her Principal at San Diego High, Joe Austin. She is valedictorian of her class and a young woman of grace and accomplishment.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Duane RothSpeaker – Duane Roth, CEO of Connect

Duane discussed the history of Connect since its inception 27 years ago and its impact as an enabler through its focus on research, talent, and funding, for the explosive growth of technology companies and research in the San Diego area, which is now a globally acknowledged center for technological excellence.

He spoke about how the geographical proximity of technologically based companies in dense clusters has fostered and enriched a culture of collaboration within and across disciplines.

Today, a technology company is launched in this area every day!

He said we could expect increased cross-discipline collaboration in the future as different technologies converge and cross-pollinate each other.
