President Carol Jensen called the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 a.m. Mel Gallegos provided the invocation reminding us to make a difference one starfish at a time. Steve Seligman (filling in for an awol Pat Cowett) lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Rosalie Kramm, Linda Jalving and former member Craig Choi directed the song of the day (Sing, Sing a Song). It a good thing nobody worries about whether our songs are good enough for anyone else to hear (to steal a verse from the song). Sandra Schrift made a quick presentation regarding Pathways to Peace and discussed a bill currently in congress which is intended to help promote peace. Maureen Eberle also made a quick presentation for the Rotary Foundation. She reiterated the club's goal of raising $13,000 this year (about $125.00 per member). She highlighted (with the help of several audience plants) how $500 can be used to help with so many things worldwide. Please keep giving to the Rotary Foundation.
Rosalie "I am always ready" Kramm collected a basket full of cash this morning. Jim Mulvaney won the champagne. Typical of Jim to purchase raffle tickets for a prize he can't even enjoy. Its all about making money for the club. Jim also donated some of his winnings from the Superbowl prize pool. Lou Scanlon was fined and recognized for becoming the new Chief of Police in Coronado. Several members contributed twenty dollars for Southwest Drink Coupon booklets.
Pete McGuire welcomed our guests which included several members of the Women's Resource Fair task force. Several prospective members were also in attendance fulfilling their requirements prior to becoming members.
The club made a special presentation to the task force for the Women's Resource Fair for their hard work on this wonderful program. The Resource Fair will be this coming Saturday, March 3rd, at the Civic Center. Please stop by and lend your support. Contact Melissa Blackburn if you would like to donate your time or money. Amy Fitzpatrick, Elizabeth Balfour and Nicole Cooper accepted the club's donation on behalf of the task force.
Lynn Hamilton introduced David Lynch of Project Responsibility. David is the founder and director of the program which has helped provide better choices for the impoverished children living at the Tijuana landfill. Since David first started working with the children, they have gone from sitting on a tarp to sitting in one of two classrooms that David helped build. Project Responsibility has grown from essentially a volunteer organization to now employing eight staff members and have help over 417 students. David told the story of Phillipe who was one of his first students and now teaches at the school. There were several other success stories shared with us. Our club has been partnered with Project Responsibility for several years now for their Christmas Santa project. Responsibility avoids any types of donations such as clothes or the like because they do not want to foster a sense of reliance on the good will of others in the children. Their goal is to foster independence and self-reliance and provide the children with a choice. The Christmas project is the one time they do rely on the contribution of goods for the children. David will be leading a tour for a limited number of members on April 28th. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at future meetings. Thanks for all your hard work David and we hope to see you back at a future meeting to keep us apprised of your successful program.
