Week's Bulletin Was Written
By Jeffrey Hogue, Esq.
President Jensen called the meeting to order promptly as usual. Jeffrey Hogue gave the invocation. It was based on a quote by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Mike Whitehurst led the pledge of allegiance. Jim Mulvany did his annual rendition of an Irish themed song in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day.
Rosalie Kramm raffled off a “surprise.” Gary Green auctioned off door knockers and “cricket” sounding contraptions. Happy 59th Birthday to Gary Green. Happy 30th Wedding Anniversary to Rick Logan and Happy 38th Wedding Anniversary to Mel Gallegos.
A long list of guests ranging from Rotaract members, visiting rotarians, prospective members, and guests were introduced by Pete McGuire.

Blood Drive: 3/15/07 at 701 B Street
- We sent out our condolences to Jim O’Meara as his sister recently passed away.
- Wiggin Out Fundraiser: Bobbi Spinner-Flack and Caroline Chen spoke about the upcoming April 14, 2007 fundraiser party. We are having some real nice “big ticket” auction items (i.e. vacations to Mexico, Hawaii, Palm Desert). Members should get their bidding strategies ready. Items may potentially be sold earlier than the actual auction date if people bid at least 60-65% of the fair market price of the auction item. Talk to Caroline if interested in early bidding
- Dr. Paul Marsh announced that the 1st Annual “HERO BOWL” will be held Saturday, March 17, 2007 @ 6:30 pm. The Hero Bowl is a tackle football game where the police force plays the U.S. Marine core. It will be held at Cathedral Catholic High School, 5555 Del Mar Heights Road, San Diego, CA 92130.
Student of the Month: Mary Dawes introduced the Student of the Month, Maria, from San Diego High as well as her principal. Maria wants to attend community college for two years and then transfer to San Diego State University, and ultimately become an attorney.
Nancy Vaughn introduced our featured speaker, Bobby Brinks, who runs a non-profit company called “Lions, Tigers, and Bears” (“LTB”.) LTB is more or less a rescue shelter for exotic animals. Below are some of the highlights of the speaker’s presentation.
- LTB started with one person and has grown to 40 volunteers.
- LTB is one of twelve sanctuaries for exotic animals.
- Bobby Brinks formed LTB due to the problems associated with the captive wildlife (i.e., abuse, lack of knowledge re: how to raise exotic animals.)
- Trade of exotic animals is number two on the black market behind weapons and drugs. *This actually seems like it would be number three to me, but the speaker said two.
- Animals live out their life at LTB.
The LTB is a private organization, and is not open to the public. However, you can become a member of LTB by donating anywhere from $20 to $10,000 to its upkeep.
