Bulletins - 2007 - 03/28/2007

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Christopher Carstens, Ph.D

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was called to order by President Carol Jensen. A moving invocation was presented by Kim Vellekamp and Mel Gallegos led the pledge.

PROGRAM-FOUR WAY SPEECH CONTEST

This was a special week, and we went directly into presentations by our two speakers with the FOUR WAY SPEECH CONTEST!.   Names were not revealed until after the talks, but we now know that Speaker A was Amanda Gustafson. Amanda is a student at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Her talk lamented out the sad loss of the handwritten letter, and showed us how much personal communication has been replaced with brief emails and even briefer instant messages. Her clever and insightful comments had us LOL in the back of the room. (Laughing out Loud, for you oldsters.) She applied the Four Way Test to assessing the value of handwritten letters in enhancing interpersonal communication.

Speaker B was Dylan Hale, a student at Brawley Union High School, and, as we learned after the votes were in, the president of his school's Rotary Interact Club. Dylan talked about the value of arts education, and pointed out that No Child Left Behind did not include any standards for arts education. He dramatically illustrated the value of the arts for the "cultivation of humane individuals" and applied the Four Way Test to the idea of promoting arts education.   After what was described as a very close vote, Nancy Vaughan announced that Dylan would be going on to the next level. Both speakers were presented with checks by the Club.

SGT. AT ARMS

Rosalie Kramm auctioned off another batch of Mulvaney Cookies. Given the response those draw, some wag in the back wondered if they were anything like Alice B. Toklas Brownies. Finally getting the swing of this sports thing, Rosalie did a lottery for Final Four participants-more news on that later.   Ron Erbetta and Steve Bridge are celebrating Birthdays. Happy anniversary Dave Ferguson. Congratulations on finding somebody who would put up with you for 22 years!

GUESTS

Club Service Co-Chair, Pete McGuire introduced a long list of guests, and we were especially happy to hear that multiple time visitor Richard Evans has finally gotten his Membership Application. We had a bunch of Rotaractors, and Club 33 was represented by no less than 4 attendees who came to see how a really top notch club works.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Linda Jalving Amazed and Astounded the membership with a taste of the music to be presented by "The Violettes", who will sing the songs of the "great girl groups of the past" at the "wigging out" fundraiser. Even Sanjaya was envious of her purple hair!! (To say nothing of her voice.)
  • Caroline Chen shared a list of Auction items, as well as a bunch of suggestions for wigs.

SPECIAL PAUL HARRIS PRESENTATION

Martin and Cindy Blair received special recognition from Paul Harris Co-Chair, Mel Gallegos, for having reached the special designation of  Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations to the Blairs! Martin becomes the first club member from our group ever to have reached this level of giving to the Foundation. We are all so proud of him. Paul Downey and Dave Ferguson added their reflections on Martin's contributions to the club, and the remarkable and sustained generosity of the Blairs in making their resources (and their restaurant ) available for Rotary functions. The president of Rotaract also thanked Martin for his remarkable sustained support of their club. Congratulations and thank you to the Blairs.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Bobby SPinner-Flack and Steve Seligman presented a check for $5000 to Paul Downey of the Senior Community Services. Paul announced that their new housing project in Community Heights ia ahead of schedule and on budget.
