THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Program Chair Nancy Vaughan moved right into introducing our speaker, new President and  CEO of Rady Children’s Hospital: Kathleen Sellick. Ms. Sellick brings to her job many years of experience as a hospital administrator in California and Washington states. Through an informative talk and heart warming photos, Ms Sellick made us aware that Children’s Hospital and Health Center is the only pediatric specialty hospital in San Diego serving 80% of the 760K residents of San Diego & Imperial counties under 17 years of age. About 50% of these youngsters have no commercial insurance but are never turned away from needed care. Children’s is partnering with UCSD to be the only training center for pediatric MD’s in the county, and is the only designated pediatric trauma center.  Every day there are 201 patients in beds, 24 families receiving services at the Chadwick Center for child abuse and 200 entrants to the ER.. Pediatric heart surgery is performed daily and 130 cancers diagnosed daily. It’s no surprise that Children’s is currently at 105% capacity, Plans are percolating to expand to outlying areas and to add a new inpatient pavilion on its current San Diego campus. WOW! We are so fortunate to have this caring and state of the art establishment. Just another reason why we are America’s Finest City!!
