Bulletins - 2007 - 05/16/2007

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Christopher Carstens started our meeting with the invocation and reminded us of the freedoms we enjoy here in the United States.  Chris recently went to China and attended a local Rotary meeting expecting to meet citizens of China.  Instead, the group consisted of foreigners because China outlaws participation in Rotary by its citizens.  Joe Marshall lead us in the Salute to the Flag.  Rosalie Kramm bypassed her instincts to sing "Who Shot the Sheriff" in honor of our speaker so the club sang a slightly off-key version of "Honey, Honey" instead.

SGT. AT ARMS

Rosalie Kramm auctioned of tickets to the symphony and some guaranteed straight shot golf balls.  Dan Cleaves celebrated his birthday and he and his wife, Tana, celebrated their anniversary.

GUESTS

Pete McGuire did his typical stellar performance of announcing our many guests without butchering too many names.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nancy Vaughan reminded us of the upcoming off-site meeting at the Zoo which promises to be a lot of fun.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH PRESENTATION

Mary Dawes introduced our student of the month, Elijah White from the Monarch School.  He is an eighth grader and hopes to study Nursing or culinary arts in the future.  Serita Fuentes, the principal of Monarch, gave a glowing summary of Elijah's accomplishments.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIP PRESENTATION

Larry Nuffer received a Paul Harris Fellowship today.  Maureen Eberle announced that the club has met its foundation goal with six weeks left to further surpass our current numbers.  Thanks Larry for helping us meet such an important goal.

PATHWAYS TO PEACE AWARD

Karny Stefan presented the Pathways to Peace Award to our speaker, Chief William Lansdowne.  This well-deserved award is exemplified in the difficult political climate in which Chief Lansdowne must operate a police force for one of the largest cities in the country.  Despite obstacles with gangs, homelessness and certain politicians who shall not be named, Chief Lansdowne has made San Diego the fourth safest city in the country.  Thank you for all of your efforts.

SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Nancy Vaughan was in heaven this week with several uniformed H.O.T. men in attendance to see our speaker, Chief William Lansdowne.  The Chief talked about the difficulties he must overcome in managing his police force and we talked quite a bit about the homeless situation which necessitates a lot of officer time.  The Chief talked about how the most difficult job position he has to fill is the 911 operators who handle a lot of stress in directing calls.  The Chief proudly noted that the police are one of the last organizations to make house calls.  The Chief also talked about some of the organizations he works with to assist in providing service to the community such as Star Pals which is a non-profit group.  The group mentors at risk kids to assist them in getting through school and keep them out of crime.  The Chief also discussed the programs he is implementing to address the use of lethal force and trying to utilize other tools and methods to avoid such use.  Thanks for an interesting and informative talk.  We applaud you and your police force for the oftentimes thankless job you perform.
