President Whitehurst called the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 a.m. and Jim Mulvaney provided us with this morning's invocation. Mary Engles lead us in the salute to the flag (and reminded us where that organ is located). Jimmy Lowe from the Senior Community Center joined us again and provided piano back-up for two Rotary songs. We sure sound a lot better when there is a piano playing to drown out our voices!
Although President Whitehurst made a rookie mistake and almost by-passed our Sgt. at Arms, Jonathon Stone did in fact levy a few fines this week. Members should plan on budgeting for some great auction items at our next meeting including a signed, limited-edition Tony Gwinn bat. Ron Erbetta won the 50/50 raffle and chose cash over the Starbucks card. Cynthia Sener celebrated her birthday. Heather Xitco controlled the floor for quite a few announcements. She is looking for someone to join the board of the Friends of Balboa Park. Steve Seligman shared a lot of family news and Maureen Eberle announced she would be hosting another ambassador scholar soon.
Pete McGuire introduced our numerous guests and visiting Rotarians including several from Rotaract, Club 33 and the El Cajon club.

Last chance to sign up for the Bodies Exhibit. Contact President Whitehurst if you are interested.
-
Padres game is coming up on August 5th which will benefit the Tijuana Children's Hospital.
-
The next District Council Meeting will be August 7th and will be hosted by the El Cajon club. Attendance at this event will satisfy one of the Red Badge requirements.
-
Chris Carstens, our club P.R. person, invited members to share a "coming out of the Rotary closet" story. The best way to market the club is to talk about it to friends, relatives or whomever you can corner.

There will be a meeting of the International Committee after next week's regular Rotary meeting. The committee needs help to support its many international projects.
Lynn Hamilton introduced this week's speaker, with whom many in the club were already very familar. Peter Shaw is a former member of our club and nearly a charter member. He has won the Rotary Service Above Self Award and is a dedicated dentist. Many in the club shared their "dental" experiences which seems to indicate that Peter is either very good at marketing or a hopeless eavesdropper! (Just kidding, Peter) Peter reminisced about the old times in the club under the tutelage of former President Alan Talbott. But Peter came to speak to us about a very important project of which he is a big part of and founded in 1981. Thousand Smiles is a project dedicated to helping impoverished families in Mexico with significant dental problems and disfigurations. They provide dental and surgical services to primarily orphans. The before and after pictures of many of the children were very inspiring not so much for the difference in their mouths, but for the difference in their eyes. These two-hour procedures often change their lives. The project has established several state-of-the-art clinics throughout Mexico which are now self-sufficient. Thousand Smiles is different from other groups of its kind because they go back for repeat visits and continue providing services to the people throughout their life and not just on a one-time basis. Indeed, many need multiple surgeries and Thousand Smiles ensures that they get them. We greatly enjoyed hearing Peter speak and hope he comes back "home" to visit his old club often.
Jonathon Stone has proposed Victoria Crown as a new member. Victoria's classification will be Real Estate Brokerage. She has been visiting the club for many weeks and this editor apologizes for not getting her name published sooner. We look forward to her anticipated induction in the near future.
