THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Whitehurst called the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 a.m.  Dave Ferguson provided us with the invocation reminding us that freedom is not free.  We sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" this morning in honor of the Padres.

SGT. AT ARMS

Many members contributed to the kitty today with various announcements and brags.  Linda Jalving mentioned her upcoming gig.  Peter Denehy updated us on the upcoming YMCA fundraiser.  Dave Ferguson gave us an update on his very successful children.

GUESTS

Pete McGuire welcomed all of our many guests this morning.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Maureen Erberle made several announcements.  First, the 1000 Smiles Comedy Fundraiser will be taking place on Friday August 31st at Singing Hills.  Lets get a group together for this fun event.  A sign-up sheet will be sent around at the next few meetings.  Tickets are $45.00 per person.   Second, Maureen was thrilled to let us know that the group "Up With People" has been re-established and will be here in San Diego.  She is looking for volunteers to help host some of the students.  Third, Maureen announced she is expecting -- another ambassadorial scholar in her home.  Daniel will be introduced at a future meeting.
  • Lynn Hamilton reminded everyone of the Padres Game for this upcoming Sunday.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Richard GrannisRichard Grannis, an executive with Qualcomm was our speaker this morning.  He gave us an overview of the company which is 14 thousand employees strong worldwide.  Qualcomm has over 6000 patents and is the leader in wireless telecommunications technology.  There has been an exponential growth in technology and speed for cell phones.  He showed us a variety of cell phones, many of which we cannot get here in the United States, that have unbelievable functions.  They do everything except perhaps park your car (that's someone else's patent).  Mr. Grannis showed how we are behind the curve in many ways, especially as it relates to GPS functions in cell phones.  The most interesting features on some cell phones is the MediaFlo technology that allow the user to watch current day television programming.  So if you missed last night's episode of the Closer, you can watch it while you are standing in line somewhere on your cell phone!
