President Whitehurst called the meeting to order at 7:35 a.m. and Brad Leitch provided the invocation and the we saluted the flag as we do for every meeting. Though some may feel doing the pledge is something rote, it always reminds me of being in school and, therefore, makes me feel young again. I look forward to it each week.
Jonathan Stone quickly began handing down fines. Dave McKee paid a fine for his nephew who was part of the Solana Beach Little League team. Rick Logan reported he is now the proud owner of a Harley Davidson. Be safe out there Rick!
Pete McGuire welcomed several guests today with his usual good cheer and excellent pronunciation. Several of our guests, J.C. and Armando, were from the Up With People organization and presented a very nice slide show on their work and organization. They talked about how the power of change can start with one person at a time. The show is about building bridges of understanding among people of different cultures, races and nationalities. They will be performing at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido on August 25th.

Jonathan Stone reminded us of the upcoming wine tasting event. It will be $40.00 per person. Details at upcoming meetings.

Maureen Eberle reminded us of the upcoming 1000 Smiles fundraiser. It should be a lot of fun so contact Maureen if you are interested in attending. Sign-up sheets have been circulated at the past few meetings.
Although she has been coming to meetings nearly long enough to qualify for her blue badge, Victoria Crown was finally inducted as an official member to the club. We look forward to getting to know her better and can see that she is already an active member of the club. Welcome, Victoria.
Demonstrating that it does indeed take a village to raise a Rotarian, the club presented Kevin McElroy with a Paul Harris Fellow. His father, Gary, and his wife, Jennifer, are members of our club. Kevin was brought up surrounded by Rotarians and saw first hand through his travel and residence in other countries with his father during his childhood, the benefits that come from the Rotary Foundation and helping others. We are sure to see Kevin at future Rotary events with his father and wife. We thank the entire McElroy family for not only their financial support, but also their physical presence and active participation in our club.
George Mullin introduced Steve Francis, former mayoral candidate who gave us perhaps a small preview of his possible stump speech in the event he runs for office again in the near future. Mr. Francis provided some entertaining stories from his political career and experiences which began in Las Vegas. For example, he recounted how as a child he saw John F. Kennedy's motorcade pass through his town and noted that JFK sat in the back of his convertible tossing out candy to the crowd. It turns out it was candy cigarettes which likely would not go over too well in today's politically correct culture. He is the Chairman of AMN Heathcare which he and his wife modestly started and which is now a successful publicly traded company. We will no doubt hear from Mr. Francis again and likely in a political context and we thank him for taking the time to speak to us and let us get to know him a bit.
