President Mike the opening bell at 7:30 a.m. Jay Sener provided an invocation reflective of Martin Luther King and Steve Seligman followed with the Pledge of Allegiance, directing the assembly to a flag atop a San Diego high-rise in the distance. Jim Mulvaney led the group in a stirring rendition of our national anthem (is American Idol still auditioning?)
And the winner is!... er was… Jeff Christie for a $100 gift certificate to a swanky La Jolla eatery. It was Jeff’s first raffle win! Maureen Eberle crowed that she had hosted several Rotary ambassadorial scholars at her home; she even got to wear a fancy traditional garb from another country. Pat Cowett proudly announced her retirement from the bench, effective April 2. Susan Bleicher praised the physical therapy skills of Mary Engles, who eased her pain on a recent trip to Ensenada.
Pete McGuire introduced our many guests, including visiting Rotarians.
Maureen Eberle and Jeff Christie introduced and inducted the ubiquitous Paul Downey, executive director of Senior Community Centers. Wow, what a resume this guy has! We’re so pleased to have lured him away from that “other” downtown club.
Derrick Cartwright has been the director of the San Diego Museum of Art since 2004. He pointed out that the SDMA is one of the oldest museums in San Diego, opening in 1926. It regularly has some 15,000 objects on display in its permanent collections and 12 changing exhibits. The museum attracts 400,000 visitors a year. Exhibits coming soon to the museum:
- Feb. 2 – Kindred Spirits, a show of American landscapes by Asher B. Durand
- Feb. 22 – Rhythm of India, an exhibit highlighting the works of Nandalal Bose, the “Picasso” of India.
- May 24 – Georgia O’Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle
- July – showcase of Eleanor Antin’s Historical Takes
- November – A display of 40-plus decorative kimonos, in collaboration with the Timkin Museum.
Derrick shared that he is pursuing collaborations with museums in China, Italy and Russia with the hope of exchanging world-class art. He also shared that SDMA is working with a renowned UCSD researcher who, with the aid of technology, can detect images (e.g. artist original sketches) underneath paint on canvases. This guy was actually mentioned in The DaVinci Code.
