Mel Gallegos and Carol Jenson reported that the Rotary Foundation drive is going well. 73% of the goal has been achieved. Carol reminded the club of all the good things that come from donations to the Rotary Foundation and thanked everyone for their support thus far.
Steve Seligman and Bobbi Spinner-Flack presented Father Joe with a check for $1,000. Father Joe told us the money would go to support Pierre's Place which is a restaurant run by at risk teens. The restaurant gives them much needed work experience. 40 of the 48 program participants are in college with 4 others in the military and the other 4 with good jobs. Its always nice to hear how money we raise will be used.
Scott Carr introduced a very special guest this week, his wife, and San Diego County Bar President Heather Rosing. Heather discussed her agenda for her presidency which will focus on civility in the bar. The Bar Association has over 8,000 attorney members. The push for civility applies and benefits everyone, not just lawyers. For one thing, civility will help offset the bad public image to the non-lawyer public. Maintaining civility will keep costs to litigate down. Heather analogized the Bar Association to Rotary by proudly noting that the Bar Foundation gave out over $200,000 in grants. She pointed out some of the programs the Bar Association offers such as private conflict counsel and the Lawyer Referral Service. She also summarized some of the efforts being undertaken to improve diversity between the bench and the bar. Overall, Heather reminded us that adherence to civility standards, even among non-lawyers is a worthy endeavor which will only reap positive benefits for all. Heather invited us all to attend a Celebration of Civility at the Bar Association on April 24th. It was fun to have Scott's wife speak to us and we now see why he is such a good natured guy.
