This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

This week's meeting commenced on time as President-Elect Mel Gallegos runs a tight ship!  Jack Gilbert provided this morning's invocation followed by our salute to the flag.

SGT. AT ARMS

Lots of interesting auctions this morning including a very large bottle with a snake in it?  I presume it was tequila.  Jonathon Stone also auctioned off some of Ryan Ferguson's new cd, one of which I purchased.  Pretty nice listening.

GUESTS

We again welcomed several guests but no visiting Rotarians today.

SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Jeanie MerrillKarney Stephan and Sandra Schrift introduced this week's peacemaker speaker as part of our month long tribute to peace and the people who make it happen, especially our military.  Cmdr. Jeanie Comlish leads one of only two hospital ships in our naval fleet.  This ship has been on numerous humanitarian missions and only goes out with presidental approval or from the Secretary of Defense.  The ship has no weapons except for defensive purposes.  There are 1000 beds with 12 operating rooms and 79 intensive care beds and 50 e.r. beds.  The shortage of nurses precludes this ship from operating at full capacity.  The ship has full lab services and CT scan capabilities.  The ship has self-sustaining medical equipment repair personnel.  The ship has the ability to generate 3000 gals of water per day.  When the ship first deployed to provide Tsunami relief, it took 4-6 weeks to arrive. This was its first run for humanitarian relief. In 2006, the ship went to 10 different places and stayed a little longer than they would be able to do in a disaster situation.  The collaboration with non-government organizations (NGO's) enables these missions to have longer lasting effects because the partnerships allow for staying power and follow-up missions.  Humanitarian efforts such as this can change national opinions of Americans.
